5 stars in Mexico is like no star in USA or europe. I think hotels assign the stars to themselves. the better hotels classify themselves as gran turismo and such things.
I have stayed in many 5 star hotels here in Mexico that are barely mediocre

45 Fan is an obviously uninformed at the least. In tourist hotels and restaurants in Mexico, ALL water and ice is safe. In other locations, just drink bottled water. The fact that one should not drink tap water in Mexico is NOT because the country is filthy. For the most part, it is very clean. But pipes are old, contain lead and sometimes have leaks, so it is not safe to drink tap water.

stella39
5 stars = exceptional properties offering the finest accommodations and amenities with an outstanding variety of premium facilities and services.

I would say that a 5 star hotel in Mexico is equal to a 4 star in USA. What determines finest and outstanding? You can't compare a Ritz in the Mexico to one in USA. I have traveled to Mexico many times. I have also stayed in some of the finest resorts in USA.

I must say one thing, the personal service you receive from the Mexican employees are far superior than SOME of the US employees in the best hotels in USA. But that's not enough to rate a hotel/resort a 5 star. This my personal opinion. )

Vaggaloor
The sistem of star leveling is an international standard.
Only, in México a 5 stars hotel is cheaper than in USA, just as many other things.

Actually, 5 stars doesn't really translate across the hotels; the ratings are applied by each rating system and reflect how they compare within each company's own rating scales. That's why Travelocity, Expedia, Hotwire and Priceline etc. can all show different stars depending on the own grading system. Generally, 5* are the highest rated and most compnies will give it a 5* with some giving it 4 or 4.5* The standards generally apply internationally but within Mexico - 5* are the most luxurious and are typically upscale expansive resorts with many amenities.

Alfa
It depends of the region, the authorities have a list of requirements to assign the stars according to the international system, but I experienced also in Europe, that in small cities, the standard is not the same, like in the big cities or touristic resorts areas.

Sans
You can't compare a Ritz in the US to one in Mexico?? Have you ever stayed at a Ritz Carlton in Mexico? We have and trust me they keep the same standards.

lpaganus
5 stars for a Mexican hotel means its working very hard to meet US and European standards. There are some, not widely known to the average traveler, that are the epitome of luxe. What's with this still don't drink the water stuff? Pure water and ice is everywhere in Mexico even in no star hotels.

Klakman
None it would be a 10/10 crap hotel.

Lprod
garrison is right, the categorization doesn't change from one country to the other....... if a hotel is catalogued as a 5 star in here, it means it'd be a 5 star anywhere else too. You could possibly wonder about 1 or 2 stars, which might be a bit nicer in US or Europe than in Mexico, but not for a 5 star hotel..... not many have this category, so if they do it's because they comply with the requirements.

Nayita
5 is 5. Here and in China

garrisonbight
A 5 star hotel is a 5 star hotel ANYWHERE in the WORLD... the stars are based on goods and services and that doesn change... so a 5 star mexican hotel would be a 5 star AmeriKan hotel... it's an INTERNATIONAL standard.

Chinguis Jan
MMM let me think.... MMM, A five starts hotel is a 5 starts hotel in the U.S. -_-
