If you don't have much carryon baggage take the metro (subway) to the center of town and tour the area around the zocalo (main plaza) or go to Chapultepec Park on the metro and see how many Mexicans spend their Sundays. Just be careful and enjoy the adventure. I have been to Mexico City many times and have never had a problem. Just don't take the VW taxis. |

One year I was there with the wife and kids, and we had a four hour layover there. We went outside and looked for the "M" (metro/subway) sign; got on the subway and went to the zocalo; looked in the church; bought some souvenirs from street vendors and had lunch in a department store nearby. Then we took the Metro back to the airport with plenty of time to spare. If you go out don't spend all your money, remember to keep back enough for the departure tax. |

When I lived in Mexico I arrived at Mexico City airport. They had these things kinda like a coat check where you could pay to have your luggage checked and watched by an attendant. Just make sure you have luggage locks for ALL bags and carry valuables with you. Just make sure of their hours of operation so they are open when you plan to return for your connecting flight. If you want to walk around and just take in the sights feel free to. Just say on guard. We went to see this Cathederal that was lop-sided because of the settling it did, I dont remember how far away it was, but i remember it being fairly close. Just don't venture too far away from the airport, have some pesos on you to take a taxi back if you get lost. Mexico City is a beautiful place worth taking a look at. And like any major city in the world it has a crime rate. But just be smart. Like I had said I lived in Mexico for around 8 months and traveled ALOT. Good luck have fun!!!!
Ps where are you going in Mexico? |

If you are adventurous take the metro to Zocalo station, it is really beautiful there. Try not to take any bags or backpacks, is not as bad as people say, but just be cautious and enjoy the city of the palaces.
here is a link to the metro system subway and a map, it is in Spanish though.

I would call a taxi (Elite service which is completely safe and not really expensive) and ask him to take you downtown (They charge $20.00 US for two hours. After that you can probably return to the airport and have lunch on the Camino Real hotel which holds 4 very good restaurants. Enjoy! Elite Taxi PH 56601122 (from Mexico City, they arrive like after 10 min and give you a passcode so when they get there you are sure its them!) |

The airport is huge! Spend some time walking around the airport and the different shops. It's almost like going to the mall! The workers in the shops are friendly. You could chat with them.
I wouldn't venture outside the airport--the traffic is unpredictable and usually very heavy going to the Zócalo. The cabs actually charge extra to venture out there.
The subway is unsafe--the tour guides told us about getting a "free massage" in the subway cars. There are separate cars for women and children to ride in. |

I would stay in the airport. Even if you have a 6 hour layover, you will probably spend an hour going through customs and immigration, and then you will need at least another hour before going back through security. That only leaves you with 4 hours. Traffic can be awful around the airport, and there isn't much to do near the airport. Still, if you decide to leave the airport, make sure you spare 1 hour to and from the airport to have time to return. That leaves you with 2 hours, you could get lunch or walk in the Condesa or Polanco areas, which are nice and not too far. Good luck. |

I agree. Stay in the airport and watch your stuff for sure. The only really safe area for tourists is the Zona Rosa and it is some distance from the airport.
Plus you have to be really careful about the taxis you use. They can be very unsafe. |
