A Mexican city without Americans? |
Does anyone know where I can go in Mexico where there are not a lot of "gringos" Somewhere that has a lot of people but not packed with travelers? I was thinking Guanajuato but with the college there maybe too many americans. Any help would be great. I want to visit Mexico but without thinking I am in Los Angeles, if you know what I mean. |

Yeah, Guanajuato, Guadalajara, San Miguel Allende all have LOTS of "gringos." Those who suggest Veracruz are right on, There simply are no international tourist facilities around the state (but LOTS of in-country i.e. Mexican, tourism.) The city of Veracruz is excellent (best seafood in the country) as are the beach areas north around Tecolutla and the Costa Esmerelda. Charlie mentions Xalapa in the coffee growing interior of Veracruz state (really nice, I hear) and also Orizaba and Cordoba.
Generally the farther south away from the "touristic" coast the better off you will be. Merida is a good choice and so are Campeche, Chetumal and Tuxtla (as well as nearby San Cristobal). Oh and lets NOT forget a great city to visit Morelia, Michoacan and as mentioned Puebla and nearby Tlaxcala!
If you check all those places out on the net, you will find enough great unspoiled places in Mexico to keep you happy for years....................
(and just a note to Mr. "ricmon87" below: it is obvious from your racist remark that you are from the United States (probably Chicago...) in the US you have "white" Americans, "black" Americans, "latin" and "hispanic" Americans (who are NEITHER "latin" NOR "spanish"). Down here in Mexico we just have MEXICANS! The word "gringo" in Mexico does NOT mean a "white" person, or a "tourist", or a "foreigner." It simply means ANY person from the United States of America, white, black, yellow or brown! Estadounidense, norteamericano = "gringo" = YOU! - for example - you can just keep all that racist "white/black"crap up there north of the border where it belongs, thank you very much) |

Xalapa, the capitol of Veracru is a great city. There are over a million people in alapa, and maybe 200 gringos. It is beautiful, many great places to visit nearby, lots of things to do. i am an American living in a tiny town about half an hr. from Xalapa. There are many other great cities in Mexico too that have few gringos....just avoid the tourist centers. |

You will not find many gringos in Guanajuato, GTO although there is a small colony of residents. Not too many gringos attend the university in GTO but there are a lot of tourists who visit there in the summer that speak English. There are a lot of gringos in San Miguel de Allende, GTO.
You will find very few gringos in Puebla, Puebla and it is a nice colonial city just two hours from Mexico City.
You will not find many gringos in Veracruz because most of the cruise ships leaving from the US do not stop in Veracruz. For a beach with almost no gringos try San Blas, Nayarit but beware of the mosquitoes at night. Just stay inside in the early evening. Near San Blas visit La Tovara and see the crocodiles and turtles and swim in a beautiful place at the end of the boat ride.
Not too many gringos visit the colonial cities of Zacatecas and Aguascalientes.
At this time of the year you will find a lot of travelers but many of them will be Mexican, especially in early August, just before school starts. |

Mérida. Go to Mérida. You won't even feel you're in Mexico!!! hahahaha Just kidding.
Mérida is a great spot. Other places: Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Durango, Zacatecas, Culiacán, Morelia.
Now if you're taking LA as a point of reference, you will have a lot of trouble, because rather than thinking that Mexican cities can be like LA, it's more like LA is like Mexican cities. |

guanajuato doesnt have many white people since not a lot of americans go to the university..however you will see a bunch of white people during october which is when guanajuato has the festival cervantino. If you want to stay in guanajuato then you can also try Leon, Salamanca, Celaya, or Irapuato...and from there just go to the small towns outside the cities which are very pretty.
I would also suggest you go to Morelia, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Oaxaca, Cuernavaca, or Puebla.
a place like merida or veracruz has lots of tourist, especially veracruz since its a port city |

veracruz is a nice place.. but the only problem is tat its mainly a port so try to stay away while its cruise season.. but i've heard its nice... |

to tell you the truth, all cities or big cities have white people no matter what. When I went to Mexcio City for the first time, I saw some white people and I thought they were americans, but they were Mexicans of spanish decent, there are a lot white Mexicans everywhere in Mexico. |

Probably in the jungles of Nayarit. Big cities and tourist destinations are teeming with gringos during the spring/summer season. Don't be a snob, having a friendly bi-lingual gringo around in time of need can be halpful when you get in trouble. |

Come to the south side of Des Moines, Iowa.... it's all mexicans there....
I'm sure you can go to almost any city in the USA anymore and there is at least a part of the city that is nothing but hispanics, there's no need to go to mexico |
