I just knew this was the question! I am married to a hispanic man, who was born here in the united states, but his step father was born deep in mexico. When i first started dating him i noticed they had lots of toliet paper in their trash. Once David and I moved intogether i noticed it happening here too, I lost it, I told him how unsanitary it was, and what happens if one of our kids toys fall in the toliet paper filled trash, the wont think twice about sticking there hand in to retrieve it. YUCK!!!!! It has taken me a few years but i broke his habbit! I was told that they dont have great septic system in mexico and that they believe it will clog the toliets. I think it is freaking GROSS! Good luck! |

It's not a mexican thing, it's just that in a lot of your older smaller cities and towns primarily use septic tanks and it would fill with paper rather than break down, so yeah.
Of course I could see how this may seem disgusting for someone who never takes out the trash. |

some people maybe do that in their home..
and so they are used to it.[throwing the paper in the trash] so it wont clogg the toilet..and its not really just mexicans. it can be other races too. |

In the wisdom words of my friend Ed--
In parts of Mexico, in rural areas, they don't have the kind of septic tanks that we have(in the U. S of A)
In which they can't flush down the toilet paper or their feces because they can get caught in the pipes |

it is less hygienic to put them in the toilet, including kotex and have the toilet backed up as you flush and all the poop goes all over the floor and carpet.
So, If in Mexico and you see a trash can, use it. |

It probably has to do with the plumbing back home. There were places in Europe where the plumbing was old, and we were expected to do the same.
And it has nothing to do with bidets! |

i'm mexican and THAT'S NOT A MEXICAN TRADITION. how would your fiance know it's the hispancs that are doning that unless he is inside the bathroom stall when they are cleaning up? maybe you should talk to your fiance about his actions at work. |

It may be to do with the plumbing situation in their native country. In Greece, tourists are asked to do the same thing as the pipes can't take the loo paper. I just ignored that - seems too dirty to me. |

To save money in building costs, Mexican builders often used a smaller pipe on waste lines than we would north of the border. This is not a problem in tourist areas where Americans stay, but often in hotels in small towns, there will be a waste basket by the toilet for waste paper. I've also encountered this in Belize and Honduras. |

I've noticed this too. I think the reason is because they don't have the plumbing systems we have in the States and alot of toilet paper at one time can clog the toilets easier there than here. |

That is not true. In any case, there is a waste bin tor collect all the "used" toilet paper. It's up to you to throw the paper in the toilet or in the bin.
As a matter of fact, the act of throwing the used paper into the waste bin is a question of tradition, because many years ago, the paper caused the toilet to block. |

I lived in Mexico and they always throw it in a trashcan next to the toilet, not in the toilet. There it is considered weird/gross to put it in the toilet just as it seems weird to you that they don't. I did not live in a poor area, rather with a well off family in a large city. |

this is a custom that is hard to die. it used to be that most mexican towns had inadequate sewage systems that could not handle toilet paper or hygenic pads, this is not the case any more but many people in mexico still do not flush the toilet paper |

Plumbing in many Mexican places is not up to American standards. They only however throw their waste from peeing and not from the other into the basket next to the toilet. They flush that. Because their systems are so crude, the less flushing the better but even they can't have that stench or possibility of disease laying around. Even in the nice resorts, you will find the paper bucket. Mexicans don't change their habits just because there is a perfectly modern bathroom in the building. We had a timeshare in Ixtapa for many years. Even in our inland excursions did we ever see poo in the basket. While I don't like the other either, they at least clean it out constantly. |

Basically it is because of plumbing. No try imagining using a squat toilet! |

I truly hope this is a misunderstanding. If it is true, I will never allow anyone to (mistakenly) call me a Mexican ever again. |
