DON'T
Used to do it all the time...wouldn't do it today
Still ride Mexican busses tho..if your Spanish is good, its a great way to travel around on the south side of 'The Creek' |

use the hub and spoke method, choose a major city with plenty of english speakers and explore from there. I recommend Leon Guanajuato. you can fly directly there, most US amenities are there, and is out of the way enough to be relatively inexpensive.plus is in the heart of the colonial region. |

I'm not sure about the things specific to Mexico, but here are some things you shouldn't go without!
Bandages, both gauze and ACE bandages(for sprains and strains)
Sunscreen
Pain-killers (ibuprofen, etc.)
Tweezers
Anti-bacterial cream
Diarrhea relief
Adhesive bandages
Foot care items: athletic tape, blister bandages, "moleskin" patches, etc.
Anything else you tend to need: asthma inhaler, for instance.
Also:
Always be willing to turn back if your trip is threatened by bad weather, injury, or the like. The journey is the point, not the destination. Bad things can happen if bad decisions are made out of stubbornness.
Carry spares wherever possible: things break and get lost; bulbs burn out and boot laces break.
You can buy foldable stoves that burn solid fuel bars and fit into a pocket: a marvellous saviour when everything is too wet to burn and you are in dire need of a hot beverage.
Rope always finds a purpose. Polypropylene rope is light and very strong and can be used for washing lines; storm-setting your tent; hauling people out of holes in the ground; crossing rivers; dragging your rucksack up a cliff face and hanging your kit out of the reach of animals.
Whenever possible, start pitching camp at least an hour before sunset. Setting up camp at dark is much more difficult. *Antipersperant rubbed onto your feet can help avoid blisters. |

hmmm backpacking here.....hmmm. i suppose it depends on what you wanna see. i live in toluca estado de mexico. there are some great hikes near here, namely the nevado de toluca. but its cold here at night because of the elevation.
crime....mind your p's and q's. no one will bother you.
most hiking here would best be described as....day trips. the hub and spoke idea is really the best idea. its very mountainous and the terrain is difficult if youre not experienced. you can take short cheap bus trips and discover new places and hike from there, but distances are great between major places!

Click the link below and get a copy of Backpacking in Mexico by Tim Burford. You'll learn more from that, than from a few paragraphs written in answer to your question. And try to learn some more Spanish--like how to ask directions and to understand the response. There's a big difference between derecho (straight) and derecha (right). |

Choose another country!!!!!! But if you insist, go into the hills above the city of Oaxaca,Oaxaca, their you will find good peyote buttons or (magical mushrooms) as some people call them. But be careful if you don't pick the strychnine off that grows on the outside of the button, you can die and their goes the expedition!! Once you eat the mushrooms and live you will be so high that you will wonder in the hills for a long time, days, maybe years, and when you come down you won't worry about backpacing anymore. You will be a hopless American dope fin living in the hills of Mexico!!! |
