Any recommendations for my road trip in Central Mexico?

I'm planning a trip to the Pyramids of Teotihucan from Southern Jalisco near the Colima border. I'm planning a stop in Lake Patzcuaro in Michoacan. What other good places are there to see along the way? Is Mexico City worth the trouble? I'll be driving a rental and I speak fluent Spanish.

Tzintzuntzan is a major handicraft center with vegetable fiber weaving and carved wood.
Paracho if you're interested in guitars.
Tula in the state of Hildalgo is not as impressive as Teotihuacan, but it might be worth a stop.
When you get to Teotihuacan and you're ready for lunch, go behind the Pyramid of the Sun, there should be a sign pointing to a restaurant. The restaurant is inside a cave-cool.
Don't try to drive through Mexico City, try to drive around it. If you can get a hotel in Coyoacan, you can get around the city on the Metro. The National Museum of Anthropology is not to be missed.

Last thing, be careful in Mexico Citiy, im mexican, but im from the north of Mexico, and I don´t like mexico city it´s so dangerous!. take care and have fun, oh and welcome!

Great places...Excuse my spelling) consider Guadalajara, Janitzio, Morelia (great place w/ aqueducts) and Ixtapa (on the coast). Mexico city is a smog bank...the pyramids are awesome...I climbed to the top of two, but be careful...steep steps.

And of course...bottled water only and no street vendor-cooked food in the water (corn)...however you will find a great little restaurant in just about every city neighborhood. Wish I was in your shoes!

I would take along an extra gasoline container.
You never know how far it is to the next gas
station.
Also, an extra can of water would be good.

Somewhere beautiful...mountains!

It is a good thing you speak fluent spanish, you'll need it. (Of course). Be mindful that there will be bandits (thieves), so do NOT travel with anything with a lot of value. Do not bring to Mexico your digital camara, ect. Do not flash anything expensive, it'll get stolen. Be careful of pickpockets, but you would get that problem anywhere, even Europe.

I have never been to Mexico City, so I cant help you there.
