Any sight-seeing / restaurant ideas for a first trip to Cancun?

My wife and I are going to Cancun for our first anniversary. We're staying and the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral and we were looking for ideas of stuff to do while we were in Mexico. We going from July 13th thru the 19th. If anyone has any good ideas of restaurants or things to do, let us know. Thanks!

Check out http://www.cancun for a bunch of idea's. I would take a visit to the Argentian Steak house it's amazing, if you get the chance also try Cambalache steak house. Here's a thread that may help you.

Have fun.

Don't get taken in by the beach resort life. The Yucatan has wonderful things to see other than just Chichen.
Rent a car, see the sights, go to Merida(much better than Cancun) eat lots of Yucateca dishes . Stay away from the beach area and clubs.

Get an all inclusive package with your hotel, that way all meals and liquor are free. There are lots of restaurants but you will find that the package is well worth it and you can still go out to other restaurants.

If you don't get the all inclusive package you will spend a fortune in food and alchohol. The packages are cheep. So when your just lying on the beach they will bring you the drinks for free all day.

What my hubby and I do is get the package and use it for breakfast, lunch and drinks, then if we feel like going elsewhere for dinner we do, if not dinner is free in that package.

Stay out of downtown Cancun it's not very safe right now, it's all over the media about the murders and corrupt police.

Stay in the resort areas and take lots of sunscreen, at this time of the year its very hot in Cancun.

Well over 100 degrees

Have a safe and fun trip.

Xcaret is definitely worth the visit. Check their web site: http://www.xcaret.com/ they have activities to fill your day and then a killer show at dinner time. They have a van that will pick you up at your hotel and bring you back.

At the Isla shopping center in Cancun Hotel zone you can find many restaurants, bars and of course tons of shops. Not a bad place for shopping. There is an aquarium in the shopping center: http://www.laislacancun.com.mx/

You can go for some snorkeling at Garrafon in Isla Mujeres.

Cancun has tons of restaurants and bars. While the bars are fun and there are tons for every kind of taste (by the way Coco Bongo has a killer show worth checking) the restaurants are not necessarily one of Cancun strong features. There is a restaurant for every kind of taste and most of them are fairly decent. But I would not go out of my way to visit any of them.

A note to "unknown friend" that answered that Cancun downtown isn't safe... before you write something like that you need to know what you are talking about! I am a blond, blue eyed American living in Cancun and Downtown is Safe. My husband and I (alone or together) have walked the streets from 6am to 3am and have never encountered problems of any kind. In this case the old saying applies "better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot than to open it and be known as one."

With that off my chest...Lobster Dinner Cruise for your anniversary let them know that it is for special day and they will make it very special for you.

There is cavern diving:check it out at www.hiddenworlds.com or take a look at www.xcaret.com they have a wonderful evening show, swim with the dolphins or enjoy Mexico history. Take a ferry ride / tour of Isla Mujeres, this makes for a fun day.

Make sure that you take some time to walk the beach or lay by the pool. July is hot and humid so be prepared.

If you want to venture to downtown there are some great inexpensive restaurants on Av. Yaxchilan (Perico's, La Parilla) on Av. Coba my favorite is El Tacolote (food and entertainment).

What ever you do have a great vacation and happy anniversary!
