We've just returned from Mexico, although we stayed just outside Cancun in Xcaret. It's a wonderful place, don't let anyone put you off. The weather is amazing, it's really hot! We went into Cancun once and I didn't see anything bad. It's very built up with absolutely loads of pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants so you won't have to worry about it.

Alternatively choose to stay at an all inclusive hotel outside of Cancun, most of these are along the beach (which is beautiful). The Moon Palace is a good one and we stayed at the Occidental Grand Flamenco.

We flew from the UK (not sure if you are from the US) and we didn't have any injections but I would still double check with your doctor as we travel to tropical climes regularly and have had loads of injections in the last few years.

If you do go, make sure you do the Sea Trek at Xcaret park - they put a big helmet thing on your head and you walk along the sea floor! It's not like scuba diving as the helmet has air pumped into it. Also swim with dolphins and visit Coba and climb the pyramid.

I was there 5 years ago, but I think it is very expensive (I buught a simple ice cream on the street, an i t cost almost 8 dolars!!!!), I prefered to buy something in the down towns stores.

I think it is better to go to Merida city, from there you can take the bus to Cancun duringi the weekend (3 hours), but you have reasonable prices and a lot of culture:

I you decided anyway to stay the whole time in Cancun, you can visit Cuba (15 minutes by plane), Cozumel, etc.

Not all the cities in Mexico have a god desinfection / filter system to clean the water (I tasted the water in Acapulco, and it has a fishy digusting flavor), for this reason some hotels have an additional own water desinfection system.

About where to eat, the big restaurants chains have a good food and they receive continues sanitary controls. But be carefull about the chile, there are "habanero" and "manzano", they smell delicious, but it burns terrible.

Cancun is not the only place to visit in MExico. There are other cool places, lots. Look it up.

My grandmother went on a cruise there a few months ago (she's still young for a grandmother, she's not an old fogie, as she gets the newest electronics before I do! lol) Anyway, I dont remember where she said was good to eat at, but she did have to have some injections.
