I can give you some directions, like
If you are in a business meeting an this Mexicans guys ask you to lunch with them expect a party and very little business and it will consume your entire afternoon...do not try to avoid it if it happens.
A lot of old school mexicans like to put their college degree in their business card instead of only their names.. for example if a lawyer is name Juan Perez his business card will have the title Lic. Juan Perez. or if he is an engineer his card will say Ing. Juan Perez.
Also depends where are you making business, if you are going to make business in Mexico City, try to wear a tie and suit, same goes for Guadalajara or Monterrey,Puebla, Queretaro. if you are making business in a hot place try to go casual but not too much, a nice dress shirt and a nice pants will do, but never wear cargo pants or jeans.
In the Yucatan peninsula as hot as it is you can also wear a guayabera shirt, and if you are in a formal dinner for example you can wear a guayabera with long sleeves, there is also something called Guanabera a very formal shirt that is only use in weddings, replacing a tuxedo.
In some cities they still make a 2 hour lunch. but they also work until late.
In big cities expect people to stop working around 7 or 8 pm.
Punctuality is not seen too much but very appreciated by most.
The Mexican Manhatan is Santa Fe in Mexico City.

Mexico is just like any other big country, I have made business with all kind of people in over 32 countries.
What this people in the other answers mean is that sometimes you can go through business with some government staff through bribes and corruption, but with people like me, you do not have to pay any additional money, as we have been making business for many years now.
You will find corruption everywhere but in different levels depending on the country
We usually make Bank LCs, legal contracts, wire transfers, etc. the usual. |

It is best to have a "local" Mexican manager part of whatever you are doing or you will be subject to "gringo" prices in everything you do.
Doing business in Mexico is not like the US. Its all about who you know and its a very small community. There is a very wide separation between the those that have and the those that don't. Those that have, seem to know each other and refer each other for new business or contacts.
You need to have a good Mexican lawyer who can protect you, the Mexican way. A US lawyer is a waste and will not be respected in Mexico.
You need to assume that everyone in Mexico is a crook. Why? Because, 98% are in business. Especially if they think they are dealing with a dumb "gringo". And especially the Mexican business women. The 2% of good people are out there, but it takes some referrals to find them. Mexico is about contacts and refferals.
Lunches run from 2PM to 5PM, and seem to be a requirement for doing business.
Goodluck. It isn't easy but the rewards can be great because of the savings potential. |
