Dollars are accepted only in stories in very touristy areas like Cancun. It makes far more sense to use pesos. If you use ATMs in Mexico, most places will only give you the choice of receiving pesos.
Where and when were you in Mexico? During the early 90s when there was high inflation, holding currency in pesos could be a problem since it could lose quite a lot of value in just a month. Since then, however, inflation has been generally stable.
I've traveled all over Mexico for nearly 20 years and only in a few touristy spots did I see dollars being accepted. |

No, use pesos. Most likely if you use dollars they will give you a 10-1 exchange rate, and it has been around 13-1 or so for a good while. |

Yes and no. While the vendors all do prefer the US dollar due to its worldwide strength and consistency, you might get less for the dollar than you would if you traded to pesos. It has been a few years since I last went but they were charging the equivalent of $10:1 Pso:Dlr which is less than the true exchange rate of $11:1 (currently $14:1). Therefore, if you were to trade for pesos at a good exchange rate, your dollar would technically go farther. |

That's not true, unless you went to Cancun or Cozumel. these are mostly the only places where people would "prefer" USDs over pesos or would take them gladly. However, as they already said, it's possible that the exchange rate they give you at such places (mostly souvenir or craft shops) won't be really good, and they will give you the change in PESOS. So I guess you're better off exchanging a few pesos and using your credit card wherever is possible so you get a better exchange rate from your bank and you don't need to get cash.
If you're travelling to another destination - Mex city, Guadalajara, Monterrey, vallarta - most places (restaurants, shops, taxis, museums) won't take your dollars or if they do it will be at a disadvantageous rate. |

If you are a Brit you are likely going to Cancun where the US dollar is more readily accepted.
However, when I was in Mexico in February and March, the US Dollar rose to 15 pesos per USD but the exchange stores were offering maxed at 14.
I took enough pesos for the cab ride from the airport and a meal or two before I could get to an Automated Bank machine, which offers you the best rate. You request and get Pesos from the machines. I'm not sure how the British banking system works overseas. |

depends on if your going to an americanized city...like Tijuana or Ensenada, than dollars are better, but if you go deep in the heart of Mexico, pesos are better. |

Exchange rates are a risky challenge. US Dollars have traditionally been more valuable than Mexican Pesos. Knowing the value of Goods and Services in Mexican Pesos can better arbitrate monetary bargains or traps.
Comparing similar purchases at home is a rule that facilitates reasonable determination of value. |

No,
Pesos are better.
$1.00 is like 14 pesos. |

Converting US Dollars to Mexican Pesos:
147.26 US Dollars converted to Mexican Pesos:
147.26 USD = 2,007.85 MXN
So there is a slight advantage to convert your UK Pounds to US Dollars and then to Mexican Pesos. In this example (using a conversion of 100 Pounds Sterling you gain approximately 17 Mexican Centavos.
To get currency conversion rates a great site to go to is http://www.xe.com/ucc/ and use the Universal Currency Converter.
Have a great trip! |

depends where you travel, dollars are best used on the border regions, the beach resorts , or at major airports. everywhere else, you are better off getting pesos. to get the best exchange rate, take Euros instead of dollars and change the at a major bank or at an airport exchange. |

Hola! US Dollars and Pesos are pretty much the same currency here in Cabo. Most of the businesses will take either without an issue. As far as they going further, thats not really true.
Its hard to get 'crappy' currency exchange if you know the value of the US dollar. I usually use my debit/credit cards at the ATM's and get the best exchange rate, and pesos to use. |

I'd use pesos. They are trading at a high to the USD near 140:1 when its been closer to 110:1 recently. If you use dollars you are losing almost 30%. |

people just say that because obviously the dollar is worth more..... but the pound is worth much more.... rather give them pounds!! haha... u'll get a way better exchange rate if u use GBP to MXN (pesos)....
1 pound = 20 pesos
so its up to u... a lot of things are cheap..... unless u go to the commerical malls and all the places middle class/upper class mexicans go to..... |
