Gay mexican here, well honestly the most gay friendly touristic places in my country are:
Puerto Vallarta (Beach destination at Jalisco state)
and Mexico City...
Unfortanly Cancun (that it's my favorite beach destination by the way) is not exactly a 100% gay friendly place.
Cancun authorities are trying to have this image of "traditional family" place, because the bad fame of the spring breakers and child prostitution scandals in the 90's decade.
I love to go to Cancun but sadly the gay services are not very developed. I had a personal bad experience the last time i went at the beach beacuse i was crusing with a guy and he began to touched me "there" but in a very discret way. A beachguard came and began to nag us and threaten us by "indicent behavior in a public place"... you must understand, we didn't have sex or something that i think is inapropiate, he only touched me for one single second and then he sat down next to me.
The main problem with gay tourism in Cancun is that most of the people who work there, are mexicans from Yucatan, specially from the city of Merida, they are like the texans for the rest of USA people, they think and act in a way very diferent of the rest of the mexicans. They are very very very very consevatives in their way of life.
The gay clubes in Cancun are very small, with not many poeple, and again, the gay guys from Yucatan are very conservative.
Even with all that Cancun is beautiful, and if you and your friends want to go there, i can tell you:
The place is excellent and you even don't miss any gayfriendly service. Just think perhaps you will recieve some strange looks with public demostration of gay afection or by using dared swimsuits. Again, the beach, the sun the sand and the watter are just perfect, but don't expect a very open treatment like other mexican places like Puerto Vallarta or Mexico City.
In Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City you can find a real gay friendly treatment, with gay hotels, cool gay clubs, gay stores and gayfriendly restaurants, and the most important of all:
No problems with demostration of gay afection at public places. |

I am not sure about Cancun. I know that Chetumal (on the Belize border) is very gay friendly. My family is there any really no one bothers you. They even have night clubs.

I´m Mexican too. I second what the other guy from Mexico said. The gayest areas are in Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. Actually, Puerto Vallarta is about 4 hours drive from Guadalajara. And Cancun is not that conservative, it´s just simply not like Mexico City or Puerto Vallarta. I mean, in Mexico City even gay conjugal visits are allowed in prisons. Dont know how many countries allow this, but I´m sure they are very few.
