Expect to pay from 20% to 100% more in Mexico. Last year I bought my son a motorola pebble and paid the equivalent of $250 USD. We live in Mexico. The highest price for the same phone in the USA was about $90. |

The major cellphone companies in Mexico are: Telcel, Movistar, Isuacell, Unefon and I think there's another company, but I can't remember. Telcel is the largest company with best coverage but it's expensive as hell. They literally charge you an arm and a leg everytime you call. The plus side of Telcel is that along with the fact it has complete national coverage (like you're in the middle of the Sonoran desert it will work) and that they give you free cellphones if you use their monthly paid service once a year which is far better than buying 10 dollar cards because they run out real fast and then you end up spending 100 dollars a month on them. The first year you use a standard cellphone but each year the new one is more and more advanced and you can keep the old one.
I use Movistar myself and it's good for what I need (I mostly just use it for emergencies anyways). It's relatively cheap (I only have to charge 10 dollar cards like every 3 months or so and a lot of the times if I load the card on a promotion day, I get double the credit which is something that rarely happens with a Telcel phone) and you can recieve calls even when you're out of credit. My cellphone still worked when I was in Los Angeles, just that I couldn't load more credit and I couldn't make calls, but I could recieve them and sometimes I could send text messages.
Like any electronics, it's cheaper in the US. However, you could just buy a really cheap cellphone here for 30 dollars and use the SIM card on your own cellphone if you're going to be here for while. I'm quite sure the selection of cellphones here is far more limited than the US as well. For one thing there's no iphones here. |

You need a Mexican cell phone (Telcel) or prepaid (Amigo). To use a USA cell phone, you need to get international calling on that service, which is usually expensive, like $1.49 a minute. You can also take your USA cell phone to a cell phone store in Mexico and swap out your SIM card. Then you can use your phone like a Mexican phone. The last option is not very expensive. I was able to use my Tracfone in Mexico without doing anything, and with no extra charges. |

Cell phones are sold in Mexico but you may not be able to use them in the U.S. I have found that my Cingular cell phone goes dead almost as soon as I enter Mexico. |

Oh yes, when it comes to cell phones they are more advanced than the U.S. I was amazed when I was there. I was in Mexico City, though, so I'm not sure about smaller towns. You can visit the websites by putting "mx" at the end of any company's website, usually /mx or .mx for example:
