Are there any Bookstores in Merida, Yucatan Mexico? |
I have a friend who moved to Merida Mexico last summer. She misses the bookstores here, but not sure if there are any nearby. Does anyone know of a bookstore in that area?
Thanks,
Lisa Additional Details yes, of course I know people in Mexico read, but the area she lives in is one of the more poorer areas. That's why I was asking if there were any nearby as she doesn't know all the shops just yet.
She wants to be able to get something closer by without having to travel to Mexico City if possible. Plus, she just needed to know the names. She can't go to the stores if she has no storename to search the address on. |

There is a very nice bookstore named "Dante". This store can be found everywhere in Merida... They have about three or four in the downtown area. They have one or two in each mall (depending on the size of the mall). They even have one Dante bookstore in the ruins (in each one of the sites). But they have a very big Dante store in Prolongacion Montejo St and it has a good variation of books (some are in English). Good luck. |

Merida has a lot of culture, you should really get a map and read for a change. Tell your friend to leave her room and try to know the city, any trip downtown will get her to the bookstores (hint hint, they are called "librerÃas"). |

Sorry, I don't know the geography, and this could be hundreds of miles away.
However, I used to know a woman who retired early and went with her husband to Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, and opened a bookstore. They started their inventory with truckloads of used books purchased in the US, and I gathered that many of the books for sale there were in English and sold well to the tourists.
They did this because they, too, noticed the absence of bookstores when they went there on their vacations. And it should be said that they went through all the official channels and all the official red tape in order to realize this dream.
The bookstore, Alma Libre, has since been sold, but she's written and published a few books and online articles about the area.
If you like, you can read more of her story and see what books she's written here:
