Don't listen to the rest of them!
The only way that you can find a shark is to go uotside of the bay. Banderas Bay protects the waters of sharks.

Yep, but only when the sharks are not on vacation to Australia or somewhere else.

There are sharks just about anywhere there is salt water, but it is said that the dolphins keep them out of the bay. I'm sure that is not 100% effective, but I have been here 12 years and I haven't heard of a shark attack yet. The person that mentioned sharks in the Sea of Cortez is off base. Puerto Vallarta is far from Baja and the wildlife and sealife are not the same here as there. Actually, the only sharks I've seen here are the time share salespeople. Beware, those offering tours at the airport are all sales people. Just keep walking.

There are sharks in every ocean and sea except for the South Pole.

Yes, sharks do reside in the area. One of the biggest shark habitats in the world is the sea of cortez. This is where you will see schools of hammerhead sharks, etc. Shark fishing is still big business in Mexico.
