It's a rare occasion for any sharks to come near shore in Cancun. You won't be seeing any great whites or anything really dangerous, the sharks that hang on the reef are pretty passive nurse sharks. If you go snorkelling you will probably (if you are lucky) encounter some barracuda, just don't wear anything shiny (silver jewelry) when snorkelling and they will leave you alone.
Most of the sea life live on the reefs and won't come near the shore in Cancun as the surf is really rough and there is nothing for them to snack on there. I don't think there has been a shark attack in Cancun, at least not in recent history.
Do watch for crocodiles in the lagoon, do not attempt to feed them or get too close.

As "Just a Friend" noted, there are sharks in every part of every ocean and sea on the Earth, he lists the ones common in that part of the Caribbean. Those who said there are "no sharks in Mexico," "no sharks on the coast," "nurse sharks have no teeth," etc. thats all just hot air and BULLSHIT!
While there is a much lower incidence of shark attack on Mexican beaches than in the United States, they still happen and they happen in ALL regions. The vast majority happen not only on the coast but in 2-3 feet of water! The State of Quintana Roo (the state that Cancun is in) has registered 5 unprovoked shark attacks during the past 100 years, ALL of them fatal!
Its not very many, you're much safer on Mexican beaches than you are in Florida, the Carolinas or California, all, very true but you still need to be careful around sharks........... |

There are sharks in every part of the oceans everywhere in the world.
Most of the normal types of sharks are in that area: Threshers, Bulls, Tigers, Sand, Blues, Lemons... |

Went to Cancun in 2005, if you take the trip to Mujeres (a small island off Cancun), theres a guy who dives and catches nurse sharks and gives them to you to hold and even kiss!, I must admit I could hear my heart beating at first, as I"m sure the shark could too but it was one of the best experiences of the whole holiday, I would definately recommend it. |

No sharks, well, there is nurse shark but doesn´t bite (doen´t even have teeth), and in december we have seen bull shark but there has never been an attack registered.
Of the same family you can sometimes spot sting rays.
If you wade into the mangroves at night you can step on an alligator, this could bite a toe off. I guess is the most dangerous thing you would find near the water oh, and sea urchins, they hurt like hell.
No sharks, though. |
