Are we likely to see snakes on a trip to Chichen Itza in the Yucatan?

If it's likely that we'll see snakes in Chichen Itza, we won't go. :( But, if anyone has been to Chichen Itza, please let us know! Thank you so much!

I just want to say thank you to all who have replied! My husband is absolutely phobic (and has tried hypnosis, even!) about snakes, so these answers have been very helpful! We booked our excursion today!

We will certainly try the clapping echo thing!!

Thank you again - Karen & Mitch

chitzen itza was awsesome.
Out of this world.
i never seen any snakes

when you go... face the west side of the big temple. stand in the middle withe your back to the main entrance/temple of the jaguars/ ball games area and clap your hands about 100 feet from the pyramid, the echoes are really cool.

check out the observatory too its fantastic

I would say it's very unlikely. Especially if you stay in the area of Chichen Itza that is frequented buy tourists. The areas that most tours go to are the Northern Group & the Central Group. These areas are very open and cleared of jungle. Just look at the pictures of the most famous buildings and you will see that there is very little cover there and snakes are not likely to just be hanging around in the open.

If you went to the area know as Old Chichen, there is a slight chance since this are is more overgrown but even then I'd say the chances are slim. Also, I can bet with almost absolute certainty that your tour won't go to Old Chichen unless it's a very specialized tour. I've been to Chichen Itza and many other ruins that are much more remote in the area and never seen a snake at a ruin site.

In many, many trips I've only seen one dead snake on the road on the way to Itzamal. Other than that it's been snake free for me. I'm sure you'll be fine.

We went for a day in February and we did NOT see any snakes. We stayed on the paths - I think you will be safe from them as long as you stay with other people. They are probably more afraid of you than you are of them. Chichen-Itza is DEFINATELY worth seeing, dont let the possibility of snakes keep you away. I was also worried about snakes and even worse - SPIDERS!! I didnt see any of either.

No, you will not. I've been to Chichen 3 times (once in February, once in June and once in September) and I have never seen a snake. It is definately a place you do not want to miss. It is absolutely breathtaking. If you have the time also visit Tulum. It is even more amazing. It sits right on the waterfront. Have a great time.

Hi,
My Bride and I have been to the Mayan Ruins at Chichen Itza twice and both times have not come across snakes. If you really have the time do what we did spend the night at the Mayan Resort, it's right there at the ruins with it's own private entrance. Spending the night you can watch the night show. They explain the entire reason for building El Castle. The night show with the lights brings out the serpent during the summer and winter solstice. This is one place I will return too.
Have fun.... No Snakes

Hey they live there that is their home. I'm sure the snakes and other wildlife will not miss you!
