Are you concerned with being safe and traveling to Mexico? Are resort areas safe vs driving across the border?

Additional Details
I personally would not fee safe. Mexico is a country of lawlessness and what's happening is a result of that. There is no comparison to S Central LA, Houston, etc. I have never heard of inner city gangs resorting to killing a deputy and then threatening to kill one every 48 hrs. if they don't leave them be. In turn, that is why the law enforcement official of Mexico has resigned. I have never heard of US gangs kidnapping for ransom or beheading their rivals. Maybe it happens and it just hasn't made the news, I don't know. All I know is if you get yourself in any kind of situation right now in Mexico, no matter how innocent, I can't even begin to imagine what would happen to you.

Another government conspiracy? I wouldn't take the chance in finding out that is NOT the case!

Please, if you can avoid travel to Mexico don't go.
I heard on talk radio the other day that the drug wars and violence down there are increasing daily.
There's kidnapping going on and it's pouring over into New Mexico (or Arizona).
The following is a US government website:

To all going to Canucn!!!!!!
Hear is my opinion about why our the US Government doesn't want you to go to Cancun. We are now in economic times in the USA. They would rather see you spend your vacation here in the USA. To help out with the local economy. Why would they want you to spend your money anywhere else?

The media wants us to believe that this drug war is bigger than it seems. That is what media does. Paints a cloudy picture of the truth, just to make make money and make it self look good. Think about it. Have you heard in the media yet, that anyone has been killed, kidnapped while vacationing in Cancun. I haven't! So, to sum it up. Go to Cancun and injoy your self. Relax and see the sites. Don't stress over what you hear and can't do anything about. Hope you all have a great time.

I have a saying: " If you are scared, stay home"

Charlie's correct. We drive down to Puerto Vallarta about once a year. No problems.
We'e driven to Manzanillo, Mazatlan, San Blas, Tepic and Guadalajara, no problems.
Only issue we ever had was not checking to be sure they reset the gas pump back to zero. (Happened only once!) Since then we make sure they do before pumping gas.
I feel safer in Puerto Vallarta and other cities down there than when I go into L.A.!!!!
I use to travel over 1/4 milion miles a year in the states for my job and there are many ares of many cities here that are just plain dangerous at night.

Vale
I think Charlie's got it right. The cities on the border are dangerous (still, it's not like something bad WILL happen to you if you go there - just that there's more possibilities than most people are comfortable with) but the rest is reasonably safe.

Bad things can happen anywhere - a couple of days ago some kids were hanging around and were shot by a neighbor in FLORIDA! Now that's scary. The problems in Mexico are between the police & drug cartels, NOT civilians.

no quieres venir no vengas
I guess if u dont want to come, just stay there
please, please keep ur mouth close, we don't need u at all

Ok, what you need is an answer from someone who actually LIVES in Mexico. Would you take a vacation to south central Los Angeles? Would you hang out is the slums of New York? Of course not. You avoid high crime areas in the U.S. In Mexico there IS a terrible drug war going on with constant fighting between the gangs and between gangs and police. This is almost entirely taking place in the border towns. Since Americans buy such immense amounts of drugs, gangs keep fighting over which one gets the money from that business. You need to avoid the border towns. if you travel to the other areas of Mexico, including the resort areas and the beautiful colonial cities of central and southern Mexico, you will be perfectly safe. I am a single American woman living in Mexico and know many others . We travel all over Mexico with absolutely no problems. You do not judge ALL of the U.S. by a few high crime areas, do not do that to Mexico.
Edit: Obviously you had your mind made up before even asking...so why ask? Just baiting? Border towns are bad...no one denies that...but the rest of Mexico is completely different...believe as you choose...I live here and know what it is like. .
