If it's just 1 day during the daytime, you probably won't have any problems. Mexico City is a reasonably dangerous city and yet I've never been mugged and I go to dangerous neighborhoods during the evening all the time alone. And I'm white to boot.
Just that do use common sense. Don't go walking around with a laptop everywhere and flash money. Don't walk in a dark alley alone during the night. It may sound stupid, but peope do fall for these things and then complain that the city they went to is dangerous.
If you go with some mexicans that know the city well even safer because they will know which are the bad areas.
Can't help you more because I've never been to Tijuana before though.
As for kidnappings done to foreign tourists, that BALONEY. Kidnappers know that prision time is longer for a kidnapping than 1st degree murder in Mexico for one, so that is part of the reason why there's so few reported kidnappings each year (they rarely get over 70 cases per year in Mexico City and it's the world's capital of kidnappings versus over 500 homicides per year in Mexico City).
Second, professional kidnappers aren't stupid. If they kidnap a foreigner and news is let out on Fox News, the US government will put pressure on the mexican government to solve the case and the kidnappers will have a higher chance of getting arrested.
Therefore, they kidnap the bratty kids of mexican millionaires instead cuse a lot of millionaires became rich dishonestly and they don't want to have cops involved. Actually, I've never even heard of foreigners getting kidnapped because it's so exotic, it would be all over the news like insanity. |

Your better off staying out of Mexico, Especially Tijiuana.
Not a safe place at all, it's dirty, really dirty, garbarge cans overflowing, VERY poor, beggars everywhere, overpriced crap that you can buy for less in the US. Wages are so horribly low no one can make a living, so of course the police are corrupt. Even they need a few extra pesos to live on, so robbing tourists is easy money for them. I've heard many stories from friends and coworkers who have been arrested for stupid things and forced to come up with cash fines up to a few thousand dollars to get back to the US and not be stuck in a mexican jail or prison. One of my friends was in a motorhome they had camped in all weekend, it still had food and beer in the fridge and they were charged for the alcohol, the fine $2000. Another man died because he was in a car accident and they would not let him go to a hospital in the US. Shootings all over, one at the border checkpoint with people sitting in parked cars waiting to get back to the US.
I've heard of young girls getting left by drunk friends there and then raped, drugged. Not a pleasant place to be, not sure why anyone would even consider going there.
Stay in the US, or save your money to travel somewhere better than Mexico. |

No more dangerous than Tokyo or Bangkok. Behave yourself, know where you're going, don't get drunk and stupid...you will be a target. I'm very tired of Tijuana bashing on this site. There are cities in the middle east where people can't go out on the streets to shop for fear of death. Don't let others reduce your spirit of adventure...go, have Margaritas, shop for trinkets, have fun. |
