Alright! let's get to the point here, if you want to go to Mexico, get there! it is false that you might get kidnapped for ransom anywhere in the touristic cities, unless of course you are flashing every one with a pack of $100.00 bills =) now, let me tell you that Mexico has thousands of beautiful cities that might be very interesting... Guanajuato city is one of them, (one of the very first cities founded in the whole continent) very famous for its mummies (yeah, not only Egypt has mummies) Want beach? try Huatulco (it has it's own international airport)... virgin sand, coral reefs, diving... etc. Whant some adventure? try Chihuahua, you can try the train trip from Creel to Mazatlan and admire all of the Tarahumara tribes towns and crafts... Want some mariachi and tequila?... go to Zapopan Jalisco, home of the Tequila, get some Margaritas and dance "Guadalajara"... Want peace and quiet? go to Veracruz, or to Cosamaloapan, Ver. get a nice "hamaca" and enjoy the evening under the breeze... Mexico is not only narcs, crime and kidnappers, you can walk in Mexico city at night and admire the old buildings all for yourself without any problem. But as I said before don't show you got loads of money with you or even locals get in trouble for that... Mexico is a nice place to visit... and to spend the last years of your life... beleive me I've been living in Mexico city for the last 10 years, and I love it!

easy! i lived in mexico and there are lots of great places...and i have no idea why people think it's dangerous (or that stuipd kidnapping crap). i mean, besides the obvious border states, and mexico city, the rest of mexico is quite nice. San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, and Michuacan are all very colonial places. very small and pretty. Morelia and Guadalajara are great cities. and Ixtapa/Zijuatenejo are beach towns...but not so resorty. and also..don't feel so bad about the resorty type places...mexicans go there too! everyone loves a luxurious vacation from time to time. but if you really want that "colonial mexican" experience, but you want to be safe and still use english...then san miguel de allende and guanajuato are the places for you

The Yucatan State is nice. Lots of history, Mayan ruins and beautiful colonial cities like Merida. Itzamal is a very cool place too, great colonial architecture & Mayan Pyramids all at once! Beaches on the gulf coast aren't as nice a the Caribbean though but it's a place to consider.

I would say Los Cabos, check out the RIU Palace there it's beautiful.

Any place that has a good guard force so you don't have to worry about being kidnapped for ransom. That's a big thing down there now.

Nowhere. Been there, hate it. Too much unrest and the fact you now have to have a passport. Go somewhere else. Lots of places in the US/Canada (which you also need passport for) which are nice visits but not resort. Want Mexico? Go to Old Town Albuquerque.
