Best currency for Cancun area?

Are dollars better than Pesos? Or will most places take both?

If they accept dollars they will give an exchange rate of 10-1 when the actual rate is 11.5 to 1. Always better to use pesos in Mexico. You'll be getting over charged just because you are a tourist ... no sense in making it worse

Use the ATM machines at banks - or - Casas de Cambio at the airport for the best exchange rates

us dollars.....

we found the pesos the easiest way to pay for things, but we also cared a few dollars for back, up just in case we got a good deal on things by paying in dollars.

Paying for anything in Mexican Pesos is definitely better than US Dollars because most bars, hotels, discos etc. will give you a unfair exchange rate. You can exchange your dollars at the airport or in any money exchange spot and your money will last longer, beleive me. Hope this answer helps.

Man
Pesos are good in bars and restaurants but there are a few places where dollars go further.

ohhh
Pesos

Shannyn!!
Dollars are ALRIGHT but like everyone said- expect to be overcharged.

Pesos are ALRIGHT but you're going to end up coming home with some because when you go to exchange them it becomes a hassle.

What we do is we carry US $ and then exchange some of it for pesos..a small amount..for bus rides and such like that (PS when riding the bus, precount your pesos and put them away, so when you're drunk you wont OVER pay).

DOLLARS. However, bring a small pocket calculator with you at all times. Know the current exchange rate between the U.S. Dollar and the Mexican Peso (11.40 pesos to one U.S. dollar as of 6/27/06). Be ready to use your calculator when you are out shopping, dining, or on a tour, etc. You really will need to make a case-by-case determination whether to pay in pesos or dollars. That being said, you should be ready to convert some of your dollars to pesos if and only if the conversion rate you get (at the ATM, bank, or cambio stand) is better the implied conversion rate that the store, shop, restaurant, tour operator, etc. is using.

Local currrency is Pesos, but you can pay with US dollars as they are used to tourists from the States.

Pesos, definitley. In cancun, theres the local price and theres the tourists with dollars price.the exchange rate is usually 11-1. head to a casa de cambio in the airport or in the city. its better
