Our best vacation in Mexico was a long road trip in 2006 from southern California all the way down to Puerto Vallarta. We broke the trip into several days, went through Arizona, and crossed into Mexico through Nogales. That first day driving in Mexico we stopped in a little town called San Carlos, which is on the Gulf of California coast just before you hit Guaymas. It is a great little town, especially if you like fishing. There are a ton of hotels and motels but if you go all the way out to where the old ClubMed used to be, you will find a series of pretty elegant places for reasonable prices. We stayed in a place called Club Sport (I think) and it was right on the water. There was a jacuzzi and swimming pool right out our sliding door which overlooked the ocean. The room we stayed in had a full kitchen with refrigerator and stove, a beautiful bathroom with shower and bath, two beds and a nice color TV. It was really spacious and quiet - and private. I could have stayed for weeks lounging on their deck overlooking the beach, it was so relaxing. We stayed at other more expensive places later in our trip, like the famous Fiesta Americana in Puerto Vallarta. They were okay - but lacked the peace and quiet of our little hideaway in San Carlos. So if you like road trips, maybe that's an idea? Just remember to get the mexican insurance because it is mandatory and if you get into a little fender bender (like we did) you will be SO glad you have it.

Best of luck! Mexico is an amazing place to vacation - we can't wait to go back.

Cancun or Playa del Carmen are the very best destination in Mexico, excellent food, beautiful beaches, interesting places, exotic islands like Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, great shopping and restaurants in Cancun, acuatic theme parks, etc.

I've gone to Acapulco, Huatulco, Cozumel, Cancun and La Ciudad. But of all of them, the best was Acapulco because of the partying life. It's my favourite! I HIGHLY RECCOMEND it although it's a little dirty.

I agree with Playa del Carmen resorts. We have been yearly for 9 years running now and dollar for dollar it is the best value for a trip. This years trip ran about $1000 per person all inclusive; food, flight, drinks, shuttle from airport to hotel from the NY area. We too have stayed at the Iberostars & palace resorts as well. The proximity to town, which used to be a small fishing village is a 5 minute cab ride for about $5 usd should you care to venture. Playa is close to many major attractions - Tulum, Xel-ha, Cancun, ferry to Cozumel etc. I do have to stop telling people about it though...getting too many tourists! ;)

My husband and I have stayed at two Iberostar resorts around the Playa del Carmen area. They were wonderful. It's an all inclusive resort, so you pay up front for the food and drink. Book it with a tour group like Apple or Fun Jet and you pay for hotel and airfare together. The best part of this is that you really don't have to spend that much money in Mexico if you have your meals and your drinks paid for already. Of course you can also book tours to go snorkeling and scuba divining etc., but that's extra. I highly recommend the all inclusive route.
