Border Searches?

How thorough are the searches coming into the United States from Mexico? Will they use dogs? Will they search all my clothes and every little thing in my vechile?

Not unless you give them reason to. They usually have dogs walking around but unless the dog goes nuts over your car, don't worry. Just be honest, open, and polite. Roll down all the windows, have all your passengers ID's ready.

I've been pulled into secondary (closer inspection) at the border several times, though I've never smuggled anything and look pretty normal. I don't know how they determine whom to inspect. Maybe just every so many cars. It wasn't too grueling, but it took forever. Between the traffic jams and secondary, plan to be there a while.

Make sure your paperwork is in order and don't try to smuggle anything! I cross the Border in San Ysidro all the time and never have a problem. Yes, they use dogs who will always sniff your tires...signatures from other dogs.

they searched my 78 year old grandma's car, so you decide IS IT WORTH IT??? I think not

I used to live on the border of Mexico in Texas and when I was there they used dogs and if the dogs smelled anything then they would do a thorough search. But be assured that if you have anything (like drugs) the dogs will sniff it even if they are wrapped in things. They will ask you if you have anything to declare (e.g. cigarettes, alcohol etc.). So try not to get anything illegal. Going into Mexico is a different matter, they do random searches about every 10 cars or so they pull over and do a thorough search. You never know exactly when you might be pulled over there.

SNAP!! omg. Yeah they'll tear your car apart if they have to, I've seen it done going to and from. They turn your car upside down, no joke.

They have different criteria for selecting who's car, but YES to all the above!
