I would definitely prefer Cancun or Cabo, I have been to both and have had more fun in Cancun. Cancun is more of a well rounded experience in terms of things to do. Cancun has a lot of archaeological sites like Chichnitza, Tolum and Cabo. They also have Eco waterparks like Xelha and a really great nightlife scene. I will say that if you have a problem with humidity, then Cancun could be a problem. I personally I loved the diversity of activities. |

Cabo San Lucas versus Cancun
Cabo San Lucas is quickly becoming a high-end holiday destination with a number of resorts and timeshare clubs appearing along the coast between San Lucas and San José del Cabo.
I'd pick Cabo San Lucas.
Cancun is a pure tourist overcrowd town with everyone out to make a buck off of you. Cabo is just California prices. |

I like the Yucatan much better than Cabo, plus the water is warmer and prettier! I actually prefer Playa Del Carmen for family vacations.
Cancun is a great place to go if you are single or don't have children. I would suggest you look into Playa Del Carmen, it is located about 35 miles south of Cancun. It is much more family oriented and it is actually much closer to most of the attractions in the Yucatan. It is also a ferry boat ride away from Cozumel. You will still fly into Cancun and then take a van to Playa. (Playatrips.com and playatransfers.com) Check out Tripadvisor.com as well. I know with little ones PDC will be a much better destination for you.
Cancun is mostly hotels and clubs, where as PDC is a small town, with one main road 5Th Ave. (No cars are allowed on 5Th, one block off beach.) It is very safe and if you have little ones you can push a stroler and enjoy fun evenings in PDC. 5Th has lots of shopping and restaurants along with some small bars, not too many clubs. (Good for people watching.) |

While Chichen Itza is a wonderful Mayan ruin site, voted in the top 7 man made wonders of the world, it is 2 1/2 hours each way by tour bus from the Cancun Hotel Zone. I also recommend you consider that if it is summer when you are going, Chichen Itza may be quite hot because it is located inland. You should consider Tulum which is located on the Caribbean Sea, much cooler than Chichen Itza temperature wise, and smaller so it is a half day tour. The rest of the day would be spent at an area eco park, I recommend Xel-Ha over Xcaret. Both parks are fun but Xcaret is much too large to see in a half day, while Xel-Ha offers an all-inclusive meal plan option that will save you lots of time and money.
I also recommend you consider doing a swim with dolphins or even a swim with whale sharks (the largest fish in the world), something you cannot do in Cabo:

I prefer Cancun but it is a personal choice. Cancun is much more developed but offers more for the entire family to do. I also love the fact that there are literally hundreds of Cancun restaurants in the Hotel Zone and Centro (Downtown, more than Cabo has by far. There are more entertainment options available in Cancun for the entire family as well, but whichever you choose, you should pick up a good travel guide with lots of information so you can get familiar with what's out there. Have fun planning your vacation,
