You only need an original birth certificate and a photo ID issued by the government as of now- your school ID should work if your school is a public school. (This will change in the spring.)

More advice:

If you look "anglo", you'll rarely have any issues- they have never even read the name on my ID, since I'm blond.

Be careful in Juarez- there is a lot of gang and drug violence there right now. More people have been killed in Juarez than in Iraq since January 1st of this year. Don't cancel your trip, but do be cautious and use common sense.

While not required, it is highly recommended that you have a passport. I'm assuming that you are a U.S. citizen. A birth certificate AND a valid government issued photo ID will still suffice.

The new law goes into effect on June 1, 2009.

Passport for land travel NOT required until next year.
Your fine with your birth certificate and as Jessy said they rarely check but all that you need is your birth certificate and govt issued photo ID.
Flying w/o a passport to Mexico - airline won't let you board w/o it.

You do NOT need a passport to travel to Mexico by land until June of 2009.

And just so you know, 99 times out of 100 they won't even ask you for an ID when you cross into Cd. Juarez, you just stop at the border, push the light and if you get green you go. An id is not needed unless you are going further than 30 km south of Cd. Juarez.

forget what the others say! i went last week to Reynosa and i didn't have a passport so the only thing i showed them was my drivers license and birth cetificate. really all u need is some picture id. have a good trip!

Pay no attention to the morons saying you must have a passport.

Listen to Jessie. If you are traveling by car you only need a government issues ID and birth certificate and since your are under 18, you need to be traveling with both parents or have a permission letter from the absent parent.
