Can I take my laptop to Puerto Vallarta mexico?

I read somewhere that if you take something with a value more then $300 they have the right to take it.
Is that true?

In years past, I've taken my laptop into MX and never had a problem returning with it.
Today, I don't believe I would take it unless I knew I was going to leave it there.
They have been confiscating laptops upon re-entry into the States. New regulations from Homeland Security allow them to do this. You may or may not get it back, too. This has happened to several business associates of mine in the past year or so.
Also, you have to be very careful as to what software you have installed on your PC. Many, commonly used programs are actually illegal to take out of the country.
What with 911, terrorists and threats nowadays, I think I'll keep my laptop home with me.

Never had a problem going over the border or flying into mexico with anything.

Now the US border is another story.....and I am a citizen too

You shouldn't have any problems, but I would recommend you bring your receipt of purchase. In Mexico it is known as factura. As a foreigner, upon arrival at your Mexican destination, you might speak to an immigration/custom officer.

What Mexico try to avoid is from people bring goods to sell without paying taxes. If you could prove that it is yours you shouldn't have a problem. Good luck with your trip in sunny Mexico!

I've taken my laptop to the Mayan Riviera and didn't have any trouble. However, one thing that I have heard about lately is upon reentry to the States they claim the right to keep your laptop and search it for illegal material and sometimes end up keeping it for an extended period. The item in the sources below discusses them looking through all your data... and I assume they have the right to search and seize as well.

ben to mexico twice the past 2 years
and have taken a laptop each time

If you take more than $300 like in clothes or new stuff that Customs or (Aduana) can think you are going to profit out of it.
But a used Laptop for your personal use, camera, video recorder etc.
No problem
