Can I travel to Mexico by land without a passport?

I am planning to travel to Mexico by land this May, however I do not have a passport. Will my state ID and birth certificate be sufficient to enter Mexico and then come to the U.S. by land?

No passport needed, your birth certificate and government issued photo ID are sufficient. BUT, be sure the birth certificate is either the original or a certified copy issued by your state of birth. A photocopy will not be accepted.

You will need to show these at the border on entering Mexico to get your FMT (tourist visa). Then you w ill need to show them again to get back into the US

The US Govt. just announced officially this week that the passport requirement for land entry has been pushed back to July, 2009.

Yes, by land all you need is government ID and your birth certificate.

To enter Mexico by land, you don't need anything. Depending on how far south you go, you may need to get a tourist visa. To return to the US (without a passport) a birth certificate and state ID is exactly what you need. (There are a few other documents that work for people who have those.) I think someone else provided a good website to check.

I think you need a passport to enter mexico, but not to travel inside of it
