Hello!
My family and I go to Mexico about every 2 years or so and have to go through this process because our car also has a lien. First, if you do have a lien, the lien holder (bank, financing company) will usually ask that you pay the monthly payments that you plan on staying in Mexico, in advance. They will also ask for proof of Mexican insurance for the vehicle. After that they will give you a letter of authorization for the vehicle to enter Mexico.
With the letter of authorization, you can now apply for the Vehicle of Importation permit from Mexican government. You can do this through Banamex/Banjercito website or you can go to your local Mexican consulate. (Avoid the long lines and use the website, you get the permit within 3 to 4 days). You will need to have your personal info handy, a major credit/debit card, and vehicle information. The permit is valid for 6 months. Good Luck!!! |

Yes, you can bring your car to mexico. you ust have a letter of permission to bring the car to Mexico from the lein holder on their company stationar. You will need to get a car permit from the nearest Mexican consulate before you come, or at the car permit in the first town after you cross the Mexican border, and they will ask for this letter. See site below for more info. I am an American living in Mexico and went through this process 2 1/2 yrs ago. Call the customer service department of the finance company. They usually have a special office that issues these letters. Be sure to allow several weeks to get the letter. They may require you to pay a fee, especially if you want it sent priority mail. |
