Can anybody tell me about Mexico City, Mexico?? |
My performance group might be going there this spring, and i'm so excited because i've never been outside of the States before. I'm also kind of scared because I've heard that there is a lot of crime in Mexico, and I've been told by people who's traveled there that the water's bad. Can anybody tell me a thing or two about Mexico City that I don't know? I would like to know where exactly it is that I'm going. :)
Thanks! Additional Details Oh, i'm not sight-seeing. I'm just going there for the performance, we'll be taking a plane, but we might have to walk a little ways to hotels and stuff. What are the chances of a little girl like myself getting.. y'know.. snatched? (all the otherpeople in my performance group are boys). |

Mexico City is absolutely fabulous. Don't listen to the know-nothings who think they know it all. Geez. That's all anyone ever says about Mexico - Don't drink the water and the crime is bad. Being that Mexico is the U.S.'s neighbor, the level of ignorance about Mexico is just unbelievable.
OK, now for the good news - Mexico City is fascinating. It's very much like a large European city. The architecture is a combination of modern skycrapers, turn-of-the-century French colonial, and uniquely Mexican structures. There are wonderful cafes. The people are very warm and friendly (compared to most U.S. cities) and the food is SO good. There is history and culture to be found everywhere. If you have any chance to do so at all, you must get out and enjoy the nightlife - the clubs will blow your mind, and the smaller venues usually host live music. Some of the best rock music can be found in DF.
Like with any big city, there are inconveniences - traffic, pollution, street crime, etc... There are very wealthy areas of DF and very poor ones. Be cautious when you're out on the streets. As a first-timer, don't go out alone; be aware of your surroundings and know where you're going; don't hail a cab on the street; don't wear flashy jewelry. Even if the weather is warm (check weather.com for the forecast before you go), the only people who wear shorts in the city are Americans wanting to be recognized as tourists.
DF is a fabulous place for sight-seeing, so if you have time, check out the historic center (Zocalo), the museum of anthropology, the Palace of Fine Arts, Chapultepec castle, the Basilica de Guadalupe, Xochimilco or the pyramids outside the city in Teotihuacan. The Coyoacan neighborhood is rich in artistry - go there for a weekend sidewalk brunch if you can.
I've lived and traveled all over Mexico, including DF. I'm hoping to move back there. Enjoy it! |

Mexico City is the largest city in the world or at least in the top 2 (between 20 and 25 million), it is a great city with lots of interesting places to visit and have fun...in here you can check out the tenochititlan pyramids just an hour away from the city, Chapultepec Castle (the only actual castle in North America) and the Antropoligical Museum, which is considered, the best in the world of its class,Frida Kahlo's house and many many others...as a big City it has its level of crime and danger but believe me it is not as bad as the media makes it look, Mexico City is no more dangerous than New York or Detroit in the US and is way more intereseting than any of this cities, visit also the old downtown or Zocalo...the Pink Zone or Zona Rosa, Coyoacan, Insurgentes Avenue, take a Turibus ride for only $10 dollars...if u like night lfe i have to tell u that Mexico City has one of the best in the world..and I've been in Europe, the U.S andother latin countries...there are dozens of them...the flipside of that s maybe too many people and therefore smog and pollution but it is definetly a City worth visiting

I go to Mexico City a lot. Im from Texas and go to Mexico ever 3 months or so to see my Husband who is working in Tulincingo Mexico witch is 2 hours away from Mexico City. Im a white American Female.
Its verry crowded, lots of trafic, people drive crazy, there are realy bad streets there just like all mager citys in evry State and Countrys. The roads are ruff. The water that comes from the sink and so forth is not good to drink, but people in Mexico dont drink the water that comes like that. They buy jugs of water and so forth witch is not bad for you. People seal stuff on almost every street corner. If you are there during the days trash is being picked up, you will see loads and loads of trash on steet corners, becuase people dont use trash cans they just put it on the curves untill its time to be picked up. There are nice people and bad people walking the streets. People in Mexico greet one another when the pass. Even if you dont know them and dont know what they are saying does not mean they are taking bad or saying something bad to you. Dont go anywear by yourself, always go with two or more people. Always have a male exscort you! Mexico City is not all that bad, but if you go to some parts that are bad be careful. The city does not look like citys in the United States. People live side by side top to bottom. You will see lots and lots of people everywear you go. Dont carry much stuff with you when your out on the streets. Good Luck, and have fun. Other then all the bad stuff its a great place to see. If you go with a open mind and want to see how other people in other Countrys live, you will have fun. So go and Have fun!! |

I suggest not to listen to ignorant people that haven't traveled, judge by yourself, of course there is danger like in everywhere, u should not go out alone at night, but in touristic zones, no problem! i mean if u judge for what u hear, I WOULD BE AFRAID OF GOING TO SCHOOL IN USA BECAUSE STUDENTS KILL OTHER STUDENTS! have fun! |

Mexico DF is an amazing place. Remember 30 million people driving cars living in a dry lake bed. Yeah it is very polluted, bad. In fact when I was there people would walk around in blue masks, some days there would be little visability in the sky and it was hot as hell in the winter. For all of Mexicos downers things like teotiwachaun, oxchimilico, the Metro, etc make the beautiy that is mexico |

Don't believe all the negative hype about MX City. If you stay in the South you'll realise it's actually a nice place. And you'll discover another side of Mexico! There are a lot of French people and Jews and they're really friendly! Neighborhoods like La Condesa and Polanco are safe and you don't have to worry about getting mugged. haha. As long as you stay in a group and not cause much attention. Oh and if you're in La Roma stop by Caravanserai and you'll feel right at home... it's a hip tea house. |

extremely high crime rate. Nasty, nasty, smog, bad water. Don't go out at night, and stay in groups during the day. Aside from that, it should be fun. NOT!! |
