Can anyone reccommend a fairly cheap hotel in cancun that is suitable for a young family ( baby is 15 months)?

Honestly, I think you are better off staying in Playa Del Carmen with a little one. Cancun is mostly clubs and hotels. Playa Del Carmen is located only 40 miles south of Cancun and it is much more family oriented.(You will still fly into Cancun) Check out tripadvisor.com and research PDC. I recommend PDC over Cancun to families. Cancun is for singles and couples without children, in my opinion.

In PDC I highly recommend Xaman-Ha condos, (xhcondos.com they have live web cams as well) great prices and great location. Playa has one main street only a couple of minutes walk from the condos. Very safe and lots of shops and restaurants and people watching in PDC.

Cozumel is only a ferry boat ride away from PDC as well. Things to do; playatrips.com.

we are going to the grand sunset princess, price is 99 dollars/night per person all inclusive. the hotel has good reviews and it just opened in december 2007. the price i gave you is for the cheapest suite, i heard it is good.
we are also travelling with our young baby in may, he will be 14 months at the time of travel.

There are several good resorts for a young family. RIU Cancun, RIU Caribe, Avalon Grand, and Real Caribe are just a few of the mid priced hotels that would suit your needs. Avalon Baccara is also a good one. The Avalon resorts are within walking distance to shrimp bucket, margaritaville, pat o briens, outback steak house and flamingo shopping center. You will be pleased with any of these.

Aquamarina Beach Hotel is a good cheap hotel I stayed there for a week in Jan 2007 with Airtours, although I would say if looking to go to Mexico stay in the Riviera Maya area or further south in Playa del Carmen, much nicer!! (and safer!) many drugs and crime in Cancun. Any q's happy to answer :o)

I hate to say it but cheap + suitable for a 15 month old baby do not go together.

I think it is a good idea to consider location and not just price. This is because the eastern shores of Cancun's hotel Zone has waves that are much stronger than the ones found on the northern shore. I mention this because you are traveling with a young baby and you may wish to take him/her into the ocean. Here are a few hotels I recommend you investigate, located on the north shore of the Hotel Zone:
