Well put by "esmefort." The "Zona Rosa" is an excellent place which is safe, central and just full of "fun nightlife." It is also full of really great restaurants, bars and shopping. This area is close to practically everything in Mexico City.
You can check out different hotels on the net to find the perfect one for you and in this area there is very good security.
Mexico City is an incredible place and you could stay a year and not see all of it. It is by far the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Americas and as such its a treasure trove of history that you won't find in any other "American" cities. You can visit the ancient "Mexhica" pyramid city at "Teotihuacan," see the remnants of the huge Aztec capital "Tenochtitlan", the flower city of canals at "Xochimilco," the vast Spanish colonial areas and the incredible blend of Mexican regional cultures that is the modern city.
If you like Mexican food, this is definitely the place for it! Nowhere on Earth will you find such a variety of authentic regional Mexican cooking than right here. People have immigrated to the "big city" by the millions and they all brought their food with them. Fabulous moles from Oaxaca, spicy Pibils from Yucatan and Campeche, incredible seafood from Vera Cruz, Sinhaloa and Guerrero, "birria" from Jalisco, the delicious "barbacoa" of Mexico State and Hidelgo, the famous "carnitas" and "pastor," great "arracherra" steaks and meat dishes from the North, and about 1000 different types of mexican sauces...........
(.....I gotta go, I'm hungry.......) |

A good area is "Zona Rosa" where you can find lots of hotels and there is people walking late at night. Also, Polanco is a very nice area but very pricey. I've stayed in Mexico City for weeks and I've never had a negative experience. Of course, use common sense and things will go well. The guy that is trying to scare you about visiting Mexico City is not worth listening to. Any city has its risks and crime happens anywhere. |

I have family in Mexico City, and all I can say is get a radio taxi anywhere you go, the city is great and beautiful, but you have to watch yourself. Zona Rosa is the best place for you to stay, I don't know any hotels particularly to tell you, but if you go to Barnes and Noble there is a book called Lonely Planet, they have all kinds of useful info, they give names and rates for hotels I have found several in different parts of Mexico that have turned out to be quite nice and inexpensive. |

Right now is not good enough to visit Zona Rosa because Reforma is closed with demostratio (Yes , 5 miles of boulevard closed by the LopezObrador's loser-candidate group has a demostration camps ) and all city is a mess. Try a polanco area hotel and walk to Zona Rosa that is not too far (30 minutes walking) All museums are close to that area and can move to Teotihuacan or Xochimilco, the best places to visit.Other day Zona Rosa at night, other downtown, Anthopology museum or any other museum it depends on your interests. thats more than 3 days i guess.
I f you love old buildings go to downtown that has demostration camps too.
This demostration will stay for a month at last... Mininum till 6 th september.
Visit www.visitmexico.gob.mx. to get som touristic information.
I work on Reforma Blvd. its a traffic mess but you can walk along really fluently. they arent violent. only lazy people lying on the floor in the floor, It no dangerous, its poor people but not violent...
Good look, email me any time |

Nowhere, just don´t go alone at night, and even if you
take a taxi, you´ll probably get robed by the taxi driver
or get kidnapped for a few hours |

Nowhere. That city is the worst place in the entire Republic of Mexico.
If you wanted a good vacation spot, you should've gone to Acapulco or Cabo.
And no, it's not me trying to "scare" you. Mexico City is a truly horrible place. It's even worse than Tijuana, for crying out loud. |

Don't listen to Walter -- I spent a week in Mexico City last summer and was actually pleasantly surprised. The Zona Rosa area is nice, but I preferred to stay in the Centro Historico -- it's a bit better cultural experience. Try the Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico if you you're willing to spend over $100 a night. If you want something not as rustic, there is also a Holiday Inn Select. For something cheaper, try the Hotel San Antonio or the Hotel Roble. There are also some hostels right there if you want to stay cheap.
All of these are clean, safe, and central -- near the fun.

I am a Mexican citizen and just until recenlty used to go to Mexico city on business trip at least 4 times a year. I am an educated college graduated mexican and take offense when I read stupidity about my country.
The guy that says Mexico city is the worst in Mexico probably stayed in a bad neighborhood or is so stupid that didn't know where to go.
There is a tourist business are called "Zona Rosa" it is rather large and has most of the best dining places in the city, also a lot of good night life, but be careful La Zona Rosa never sleeps, so the same place that is cool at 1.00 AM changes crowd at 3.00 am and you better be back at your hotel by that time.
I recommend you Hotel Marco Polo and Hotel Calinda, if you are going on a budget, their prices must be between 80 and 120 the night right now, but if you are a student, you may get a nice discount.
I like Marcopolo, because is has better pricing that Calinda and it's just two block from Avenida Reforma, and it's just half block from another important street in Zona Rosa, lots of shopping and great food, I recommend you to try the Vietnamese restaurant just two blocks from it, you won't believe your taste,, you can't find that flavor in this country, also try "la Taberna del Zorro" is a Spanish restaurant, yum!
I recommend you to hire a cab driver to take you places, everytime I went there I stayed for a week, hire a cabby and pay him for the week, an average of a 40 dlls a day, it's safer and easier and you can go back and forth wherever you want and he will be waiting for you.
I used to hire them for 10 hours, and I would buy their lunch and dinner, they appreciate that, and the tourist taxi drivers are biligual, but get him from the hotel, they will know him and you will be safe, pay him at the end of each day though.
I recommend you to visit:
- Museo Nacional de Antropologia e Historia, the most impressive museum you will see in your life.
- Palacio de Chapultepec.
- Palacio de Bellas Artes
- Palacio de Gobierno
and please don't miss the Piramides de Teotihuacan, I recommend you to get the guided tour from the hotel, the tourist guide will be expert and a lot more fluid than the taxi driver.
Don't tip the guide more than 10 bucks, believe me that is an excelent tip.
Do not tip the cabbies.
And if you hire your cabbie, for the day as I say, don't tip him, believe me, if you arrange the price for you, and you buy him lunch that is more than enough, I traveled all over Mexico for years, I know what I'm talking about.
Good luck in your trip |
