If you mean driving into Mexico, yes. Entering (and exiting) by land or by sea, you currently need a certified copy of your birth certificate and a government-issued official ID (like a state ID card or driver's license)
If you go by air you MUST have a passport.

I have personally driven to canada and mexico without a passport; however, that was a few years ago, and now that immigration laws are getting tight it may be different. If I were going to another country I would want to have my passport with me for safety. If you are in a foreign country and have your passport you are safer because if you get detained they cannot do anything to you untill a U.S. martial is present.

Those who told you you do NOT need a passport to DRIVE to Mexico were correct. youcan see the site below to verify this. Read the top half of the page carefully for current, correct info. Passports will be needed for land travel to Mexico, but that date has not yet been set. it is likely not to be until ummer of 2009.

Yes... If you were flying, then yes you would need one. But you still have until next year before you need a passport when driving between the two countries. Just make sure you have at least two forms of identification (i.e. Birth Certificate and Driver's License).

Just bring it along...it's not going to use up your handbag's space.

Canada and Mexico both require passports. Car, plane, train is all the same. However you could probably walk across with nothing, but thats a whole other subject.

Uhhhh... What! If your planing on going to Canada or Mexico, then no; you'll need your passport. If you're going cross country, you need a driver's license.
