Not anymore, you DO need a passport to get anywhere in México ..... they may ask for it when you go back to USA ...
anyway you can read these websites..

To cross in the free zone along the border you need (to show) nothing. The alternative to a passport is a notarized copy of your birth certificate and an official picture ID.
The US does not yet require a passport to reenter the US but it's much easier to have one |

It would have been easier had you said more than what you did so that the correct answer could have been given to you.
Above answers are good provided you are a citizen of the United States of American.
Not so true if you are a citizen of another country that is visiting the U.S.A.
Definitely not true if you are a citizen of another country going directly into Mexico. |

I was just looking into that... you can get into Mexico with your birth certificate, but coming back to the US is going to be a problem.
I suggest you get your passport, which is what I'm doing. |

Always use a passport. It doesn't matter what the folks say on this site. The only person that matters is the customs person who stops you and hassles you.
My bet is the customs person has not read this site. |

From what I have learned yesterday on FOX News, if you are going to Mexico from the U.S., all you need is a driver's license. |

You can easily get across the border into Tijuana, Mexico. Just walk/drive across. No US official to be seen. No Mexican official either.
Entering back into the US from mexico is another matter. Firstly, you will need to cue up to 6 hours to reach the checkpoint. Then you will have to convince the US official (again no Mexican offcials to be seen) that you have the right to enter the USA. A passport is the best way to prove your citizenship. If you are a foreigner, you need a valid visa, or originate from a country which is included in the visa waiver program. After registration and 6 USD, you will be handed an I-94 visa waiver card and be allowed in. Don't forget to hand that waiver card (green, bit no green card ;)) back to an immigration officer upon exit, or you will be considered an overstayer after 90 days. You will have big trouble getting back into the USA then. The burden of proof will be on you to convince immigration services that you actually left the USA in time. The procedure involves sending an explanatory letter and documentary proof to the immigration service of the USA. No fun, it can take up to 4 months to regularize, and no guarantee that your problem will ever be resolved.
Now, if you are checked by a police or military check point in Mexico, you better have some good ID documents with you, or your stay could become quite unpleasant for a while. As usual, an international passport is the best option. I suggest you get one... |

I've been to cancun 4 times, everytime with a birth certificate and a drivers license. Never a problem. Just make sure its an official copy with a raised seal. |

Holders of a American, Australian, Canadian, British/EU Member Country*, New Zealand, Israeli Passports do not need a Visa to visit Mexico. Although a Visa/Passport does make entering Mexico easier. So if you have one - take it with you. If you have not arrived in Mexico by airplane, then you will need to pay Mexico's tourist permit fee, currently US$20. Your plane ticket will normally have this fee included in your fare (under 'taxes and surcharges'). |
