I think your father is correct. A few crazy people shoot up schools in the US, so do you stay away from school because of that?

Hearty
You are being SILLY!!!!!

Read this article on how safe Mexico is compared to many cities in America!

As a travel agent I understand your concern. The drug violence has been heating up and I think that Rocky Point is a little close to the border to discount any violence there.
However, other destinations in Mexico are perfectly safe. Cancun, Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo. Riviera Maya is 2,000 miles from Ciudad Juarez, which is the closest border town. That's like Las Vegas to New York City. Long ways.
If you do go, I do suggest one of the cities I mentioned above. The police presence has been increased dramatically along with training of the police.
Many of the resorts have security, as well. El Dorado Royale, in particular, have very strong security and people cannot get on the grounds without proper identification.

I hope that you have a great vacation.

I am an American who lives in Mexico, and while your concerns are understandable, I think you should relax. If you could see the sensationalistic news stories about things that I am here to see first hand, you would not believe the news media about much. They make everything out to be far worse than they actually are.

The drug gangs and cartels are only interested in the fight amongst them selves. There is no profit for them in attacking tourists. The only people that have been impacted have been those who are somehow involved in drugs or the fight between the drug dealers. I presume your family will not be doing drugs?

Even the State Department alert (not a warning) clearly states that tourists should stay in tourist areas. Don't go off into deserted areas or neighborhoods you don't belong in the first place!

Check this out: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/outposts/2009/03/xxxx.html

Relax and use the same common sense you would in any area you don't completely know. Stay together in lighted business areas where other "regular" citizens and tourists congregate. Don't travel distances at night if possible. There are many places in the US where you will be in more danger than a tourist area like Rocky Point, or on the highways between.

It's not that dangerous, unless you have something to do with drugs or drug dealers.
Hundreds of millions of people live there everyday without a problem.
Believe it or not, this is a mediatic campaign (I'm sure you won´t, but it is the truth. This is a very complicated matter).

lpaganus
Still plenty of safe places in Mexico. The hyperactive media has gone nuts with these stories. There places all over Europe and Asia that are more dangerous than Mexico. The Baja tourism business is in the tank and poor families are suffering. Keep your niece close and enjoy the trip. Bien viaje

I understand you but also understand that violence is everywhere, even in the most safe countries just relax do not worry, be happy.

Your father is absolutely correct. The media is telling lies to get readers so they can sell airspace or papers. Listen to your father and ignore the BS.

Relax! You totally exaggerate, your father is right, nothing will go wrong. There are plenty of safe places in Mexico and touristic areas are very well taken care of by authorities.
Media is just brainwashing you all, not everything TV says is true.

Cabochick23
Hola. Trust your dad. He wouldn't take you somewhere that was dangerous. He was right, it is not happening in Rocky Point, so you have nothing to worry about.

Dont believe anything that media says.

We have problems between the drug cartels, and between the government, but not with any people.

If you use your common sense, you can come and stay safe without any problem.

Good Luck.

I really hope that helps you out. This is not the time to be traveling there, no matter where it is in Mexico. The drug cartels are in every part of Mexico and the people are suffering so much right now that some would hurt you and never think twice about it. I live near the US/Mexican border so I get to hear about the violence every day. The first link is about a 69 year old priest from Austin that was murdered in his own house in Mexico. Be careful if they make you go!
