Canadians: Will you boycott Mexico with yet another Canadian tourist murdered there? |
Mr. Toews from Grand Prairie, AB was murdered in Mexico just days ago, and yet again, the Mexican police say it was an accident, an accidental fall. They think Canadians are so stupid that we will still see Mexico as a safe vacation spot.
My brother went to Mexico and became seriously ill.
My sister went to Mexico later and was accosted by an old woman who threatened to scream for the police unless my sister bought crappy trinkets for an insanely high price.
I will never go to Mexico.
Canadians, take your sun vacations in the US Sunbelt. You get the same tropical weather year-round, without third-world danger and corruption. |

I am from Grande Prairie and know of the Toews family (they are a well known family in this area. I travel to Mexico at least once a year however, due to this BS with tourists (not just Canadians) I certainly will not include Mexico in our travel plans as well as numerous business colleague's of mine are doing the same. For those interested in Jeff Toews tragedy you may read today's headlines in our local should you be inclined.

Dear canadian racist. I have searched on our newspapers and nothing is told about Mr. Toews and if is true I am sorry for him and his family.
If you dont like our country don't come here. I don't like your Vancouver but I won't blame all canadians for that. Is just my point of view.
I think YOU are a first-world cesspool and a shame to all canadians who are kind. |

As I've said before on a similar question. Nothing will be done... it's only a handful of occurences compared to the millions of tourists that go and nothing happens to them. Mexico nor Cancun will get boycott by a nation or even a large portion of a nation; if anything, a few individuals will get scared and what not... and once another story from adifferent comes up, those same people will get scared again...
You hear about the Aruba case? Tourism is still going hard and strong after Natalie's death...
If the local officials in your community rarely take a murder seriously, what makes you think that the international counterparts will take it any more serious? There is so much corruption everywhere. And if you haven't heard by now, most Mexican cops are corrupt, so don't think for a minute that they are on your side.... Bottom line, stay cautious and alert of your surroundings WHEREVER you are.
You risk your life going down the street to the grocery store, no different in any other country. Just cause you're on vacation doesn't mean that you're on timeout from being hurt.
Sorry to break it down to you, but as unfortunate that it is and as bad as it sounds, it's reality. Go somewhere else where you feel safe and then stop going there when you start feeling unsafe, that's the only way around all this. Cheers. =O) |

I'm an American but I agree with your sentiments.
Mexico is a dangerous place. My father works there and let's just say he has a large portion of the Mexican police force on his payroll to ensure his safety in that place.
Scary. |

well, there isn't any information about that you're saying anyhow mexico (not all) in some parts is dangerous dependes a lot on the place, you have had bad luck in your trips but it i´sn´t always like that... you're right in being complaining because Canada is a very peacefull country (i know it) but you just don't have to be like that... |

I'm not Canadian (I'm actually American), and this kind of stuff happens to Americans all the time.
Yet, it's not really a good reason to boycott Mexico. From how I see it, it's just not as safe as some other countries. Nonetheless, it's not truly worth the boycott.
It's important to note that the Mexican police are quite sketchy, and there's less protection of freedom there compared to US and Canada.
Ease up a little and give them a break - if you go there, you should know that you're taking a risk. |

No, not the least bit interested. Tourists are easy targets and from what I've been told resorts suggest you don't leave the resort area for that very reason. |

There is danger where ever you go. If someone was murdered in New York City (a truly unlikely scenario, I know), would you boycot the entire US? I live in Montana, a very low crime state, and yet in the last 5 years there have been 5 murders of US citizens by Canadians. Should we boycott Canada, or just hate Canadians? If you are a reasonable person, you can travel anywhere in relative safety. If you are an idiot (as you may possibly be), perhaps you should just stay home. Oh, unless you live in BC where the serial killer / pig farmer lives. Maybe we should stay away from pork in or from Canada...
PS, how about trying to speak a little Spanish? most Canadians I have ever met in Mx speak not a word, don't care about trying, and are EXTREMELY rude to the local populace |

How many questions about mexico must you crazy people who don't like/want to go to mexico post????? We get it, you are scared. Not me!! I have been there a few times in *GASP* Mexico City!! YES!!! I said MEXICO CITY!!! I go to visit my in-laws in a NON-touristy area, and have felt perfectly safe. Now that being said, I am sorry you have such negative views of Mexico. Like most places, there are good and bad parts of Mexico. Like most people (meaning countries), there are good and bad people in or from Mexico. About your brother getting sick in mexico, a lot of people do when they go there, most people know that but still chose to go as long as they pack some Pepto. Things happen here in the US and there in Canada too, but they don't get blown out of porportion like they do when a tourist is in Mexico. |
