You can use your US dollars. They like seeing US dollars over Pesos. Keep in mind when you buy something with US you get Pesos back for your change. That is no big deal, but beware some people try to short change you thinking you won't know any better. That's just the way it is. You can change US into Pesos and vice versa at the airport, the hotel/resort, and you can get Pesos out of the ATM.

everywhere in mexico takes dollars.but you get screwd if you pay in dollars because the give you change in pesos and make up their own exchange rate.so i would say change your money into pesos and just deal in pesos.also remember to put $48 dollars away for the departure tax

They love dollars because they will make 20-30% more than if you paid in pesos.

This is Mexico - USE PESOS !!!

Get pesos at the bank ATM's and at Casa de Cambios in Mexico and forget bringing any from up north

Mexican banks can take other currencies.

You can pay in dollars but depending on the exchange rate you can get screwed. I'd recommend getting some pesos. You can get some at an ATM in the airport.

Pay with a credit card for the best exchange

They love us currency there, but make sure you have your conversion right when paying, It does help to have the mexican currency for taxi rides and food when out and about because they will try to get more than things are worth, maybe we should try that here and restart Capitalism.

Many businesses around Playa del Carmen prefer dollars. Most will except either dollars or pesos. Converting money at some type of currency exchange will cost something so if you do exchange money don't exchange more than you actually need.

you can use us$$ everywhere. If you feel you need to get peso's most hotels have currency exchange and also right in the town of Playa Del Carmen there are many currency exchanges. I don't think it is necessary though. Have fun, thats one of my favorite places~

Mikey
Mikey wonders why you would bring , and pay for stuff with dollars.
I've lived here for over 3 years and pretty certain that their currency is pesos.
When Mikey goes back to the states , he never tries to pay in pesos. Mikey is pretty certain their currency is dollars.
Mikey goes to Europe quite often and is quite certain their currency is their Euro.
Mikey is pretty clever............................
Banks give the current exchange rate. Taxi drivers and bartenders do not. Banks post the current exchange rate. Hotels and restaurants do not.
Mikey is also pretty observant.
Mikey knows credit card companies and your American banks make a lot of money off the fee's when you use their services overseas.
Mikey's incredible brain says - Western union yourself the money before you leave and claim at any Western Union in Mexico , FAST , cheap, and will be given to you at the current exchange rate in PESO's, which is Mexico's currency.
