A suggestion, head down the road to Playa del Carmen, way nicer town than Cancun. It is only 30 minutes or so.
Cancun is like Shopping Mall with all the National chains on a beach, if you like that, then you'll love it.

I just came back - no problem for swimming, especially if it is a sunny day. And even if it rains a bit, the water is not cold.
