Depends on what you are looking for. If you want to get to know the area, the most popular Mayan Ruins that are near Cancun are Coba and Tulum. The closer ones to Cancun are the Tulum ruins. There are also two islands nearby (Isla Mujeres and Cozumel). Isla Mujeres is only 15 minutes across the sea on a fairy, a five mile long island. They have a turtle farm there and an area where you can go snorkeling and scuba diving among other things. There are two beautiful water parks not too far away from Cancun, these are Xel-Ha and Xcaret. You can also swim with the dolphins in both of these. There is night life at Cancun and during the day there is alot a lot to see. Transportation is very good to any place around the area. Good luck and have fun.

Maybe these links will help

The Oasis - any of them is the best hotel. Senior Frogs is a must as is the new club downtown can't remember the name but it's the biggest thing their. Johnny Rockets is somewhere good to eat. Bottle water only no salad or sliced fruit. Taxi drivers can get you whatever you need! Go to the Island of Woman a great tourist area also almost everything can be talked down price wise. Theirs also a water park were you can take a jungle boat tour and ride jet skies I beleive It's called Wtaer World and American money is better cause you loose a little in conversion and dollars are excepted everywhere.

I always went off season (July and August)... it was definetly HOT out but the weather never bothered me. The malls are airconditioned as well as all hotel rooms so it wasn't a problem. Definetly see Chichen Itza, you will not regret it. The ruins are amazing. If you have time, also go snorkeling, the water where they drop you off is turquiose like in the postcards.
If you're out at night, little kids will try to sell you gum, etc. They also steal watches! I heard this from several travelers, so be careful. Buses are something like 60 cents up and down the entire strip, so cabs are really not neccessary.
If you don't have an all inclusive plan, there's a huge cheap grocery store in downtown where you can stock up on bottled water (something like 50 cents a liter, much cheaper than in the hotel zone), etc.
Have fun!

You should go to:
* Mayan Palace Riviera Maya http://www.mayanpalace.com/riviera/index.cfm?lang=en
* The Grand Mayan http://www.thegrandmayan.com/english/rivieramaya/
* Grupo Mayan Golf Riviera Maya http://www.mayanresortsgolf.com/en/riviera/index.cfm

You will enjoy very much there. A friends where there last summer and they say it was wonderful

Stay at one of the "Palace" resorts. They are definitely the best. Night LIfe: Senor Frogs, Coco Bongo, Dady O's, Corona Bar, Carlos & Charlies, La Boom. Be sure to take a day trip (inexpensive and go snorkling on the coral reef).
Chichen Itza ruins is a 4 hour non-air conditioned bus ride each way. Public bus transportation available all along the cancun strip (inexpensive).

visit Chichen Itza its about a 4 hour bus drive but on route you will see some amazing scenery, once you get there you will not regret the trip, it's an excellent tour
what hotel are you staying ?
the moon palace is the hotel we stayed ***** service. plus we could use all the sister hotels at no extra cost with free buses running daily, if you have friends in other hotels in Cancun you can phone them free any time from your room.
in the main street of Cancun there is a small choice of places to eat & drink which are excellent try the tequila & some pickled chillies not forgeting corona beer
watch out for taxi drivers trying to sell you drugs
we went over in september with a 2 year old & it was perfect
the odd rain spell but not much that was the only time we went from uk
jet ski hire can range from $35 for 30 mins to $50 for 10 mins
depends on size of waves????beware????

Hi,
If you want a great place to stay that has it's own access to Chichen Itza stay at the Mayaland Resort for two nights. This place is in the Jungle and a great place to stay. The grounds are very well kept and the food and bar are second to none. The Chichen Itza experience will be a one of a kind. The Mayans and later the Toltec's held a great culture and region. The grounds of Chichen Itza are remarkable. It will take you a day to tour the ruins and see all the sites.
For this trip you should plan to rent a car and drive the toll road to Chichen Itza it's a little over two hours from the Cancun Airport. On your return trip drive the local road back toward Cancun. Take the side trip to Coba another Mayan site one of many. Stay in Palya del Carmen you'll enjoy the night life and the Beach's. The Ferry is there for a trip across the channel to the Island of Cozumel. If you dive or snorkel this is one of the best sites in the world.
If you are a diver and would like five ***** accommodations stay on Cozumel at the Park Royal and ask for Fernando Rodgers. He will take care of you tell him Lance and Kathy recommended this site.
Back to the main-land. There are a number of unmarked sites south of Tulum that are just off the road you have to do some research to find there location. One is the sea landing for trade with the lslands and a fishing port. The is a mangrove swamp in the area that leads to the sea landing and a costal beach.
