There is a lovely little palce with very modest prices called Casa Gonzales in the Zona Rosa. Clean, attractive, owner speaks English, very quiet and safe. See site below.

Go to a bookstore and look at Lonely Planet Mexico. It will tell you everything you need to know about Mexico City including prices for hotels, restaurants, everything. We spent a month down there and all the descriptions and prices were right on.

A lot of cheap hotels in Mexico City. They even charge you in pesos since it is so cheap,

Hotel Mayaland. I stayed there several times . I`ts really central. The street is not that beautiful but a great location, you are close to Zona Rosa (which is very touristy.. good place for the pickpockets) but not IN theZona Rosa.. It has recently been refurbished. the rooms are small but clean and the restaurant is great.. really .
There is a web page. just google it in
