been to cozumel and loved it... scuba, snorkel, clubs/bars, ferry to playa del, can ferry/bus to cancun, can short fly to chichen itza, world class reef.... the other really awesome feature was that it was soooooooooo safe... we literally could leave our camera and purse on the beach while swimming... also there ARE some secluded beaches (secluded enough to skinny dip).... there are also some jungle and small ruins on the island.... there is a hotel there that sunk plane and etc for snorkelers ( they allow non guests to use beach)... don't worry about which hotel to get as long as it is on the beach or across the road from beach... all of them are close enough to town and taxis are plentiful and cheap... they do have a booze cruise there, rent scooters (small motorcycles), offer deep sea fishing, scuba (expert to newbie), and ?? it is nice enough and cheap enough that you may not leave ;-)

Tulum its a ceremonial center, a place to visit. It has beautiful beaches. But there is no place to stay or night life since its not a city. Tulum is visited by tourists and locals, and the place is beautiful, impressing, its and archaeological place that closes at evening.

Cozumel on the other hand its a city and of course it has nightlife, hotels, restaurants, etc.

Both places are sort of crowded.

I went to Cozumel once and the town is small, not much happening, some restaurants, little shops, not very historical. I felt like a giant there. (I'm 6 ft. tall). I rented a moped and scooted around the island, then I had the idea to get my Scuba license, since I'd gone out on a snorkeling trip on a boat and the good stuff was deep, so only the divers really saw great reefs. I didn't, so took,a 3 day course at Studio Blue, took the test and passed it, and went on a dive. Really the beaches were just o.k. but the diving is tops. Overall there's not a lot to do at night.
I'd love to go to Tulum. I've read you can stay in cabanas close by ("Let's Go Mexico" & "Lonely Planet" guide to Mex.)
but I doubt it's got much nightlife. It would be great to see since I love the Indian architecture in Mexico.
Playa del Carmen is right across from Cozumel. It might be a good choice, have decent nightlife, and you could take a bus or rent a car to go down to Tulum for a daytrip.
As for Cancun, I'd go if someone gave me a ticket, but it doesn't really attract me since I live near Miami Beach. It is the "City" in the area and would have the most night life. You can also stay in downtown to be close to some clubs. The hotels out on the beach are much more expensive, but I've heard the beach and water are beautiful.
Read those books I mentioned. They're always VERY helpful and have great recommendations for clubs, food, sights, hotels, everything.

Tulum.

Cozumel has a lot of commercial development, a lot of people, and a whole lot of timeshare sellers on Cozumel. Tulum can be touristy, but there are some much less crowded areas.

Cozumel has more nightlife, but there is nightlife in Tulum, too.

Hi,
My Bride and I have done both. We really like the time we've spent on Cozumel. For night life the town of San Miguel rolls up around 10:30 or 11:00PM, however, you will find some clubs with live music that stay open after midnight. Your resort can give you the best club.
I'm sure you'll have an All-inclusive resort. On Coz the Taxi ride into town can run you $4.00 to $6.00 one-way. In Tulum you might have to spend up to $10.00 one-way for a ride into Playa del Carmen for the club scene.
For the Beach's we like Coz the best, the beaches are protected from the trade winds that blow across the island toward the coastal area of the Yucatan all along the beach area you will be staying at. You and rent a car while in Tulum then you can drive to some really seclude beaches to the south in the area of the Sian Ka'an Reserve area. We enjoyed the Myuil Ruins and Myuil Lagoon with a great tour of the Mangroves.
One part of Cozumel is the relaxation of the resorts and the water sports. You can find plenty of things to do on Coz all you have to do is think about relaxation.
NOTE: One thing to keep in mind is the cost of using plastic, all the Mexican banks charge a 5% fee for using credit cards. Bring Travels Checks and cash.
Enjoy.....
