Charlies is right. I just returned yesterday, the day before, and the day before that. While I was in Reynosa I kept returning to the U.S. to buy a newspaper.

This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America.

Passports are NOT needed for land travel to Mexico until June 1, 2009. Right now you need your birth certificate and photo I.D. See site below.

They'll ask the same questions as they would at any US entry point:
Where have you been? How long? Why were you there?
What are you bringing into the US?
Partly they ask questions to see if your accent matches your passport.
They have the right to search you for any (or no) reason. They may have dogs sniffing around you, your vehicle and your luggage.

Or, they may just wave you through with barely a word or a glance.

i have crossed the border a million billion times beacause my family lives in mexico and usally they just look at you and let you go through. we never really bring our passports. but bring one just incase sometimes all they say is what is your name. whats in your bags where are you from why are you visiting and stuff to see how you sound like if you have a accent. if you do then that dosent effect anything. sometimes they shine a flashlight too.but its nothing scary. im acually going this thanksgiving to mexico. but not the pretty part like where you are going =( well have fun with your trip.

They dont ask you much, first question is are you a US Citizen, just say yes. and show your papers, then your free to go unless they signal you to go to the check station where they search your car etc...

if your going during the 2008 year you don't necessarily need a passport all you need is a pitcher Id and your birth certificate. in 2009 you will need a passport.

I have never been asked questions going or coming. Like Charlie said, passports will NOT be needed until June of 2009.

You do not need a passport if you are only traveling as far as the border town. You can still reenter the USA with your drivers licence until June 2009

These days you have to have a passport.

You need a passport now. They quit asking questions this spring. Don't go if you don't have one, as your visit could become permanent.
