Cuncun - From Resort to Attractions Rent a Car get Taxi or Take Bus?

Hi I am traveling to Cuncun, Mexico with my husband, child and parents in February, so 4 adults 1 child. We'll be staying in Mayan Palace Riviera Maya. I would like to know if it is more cost effective to rent a car or take busses. My daughter is 2 years old. Also, should I take her car seat with us?

Thanks for your help

The Mayan Palace should have shuttle vans to take you to town, from there you can take the tours, which included transportation to attractions. Your hotel is actually much closer to Playa Del Carmen, so you may want to brush up on Playa Del Carmen. You and your parents will enjoy the town of Playa Del Carmen much better than Cancun anyway, Cancun is actually geared for singles, lots of clubs and not much else. Playa Del Carmen is a nice easy going town with plenty of shops and restaurants. Tripadvisor.com (Playa Del Carmen) PDC is also just a 40 min. ferry ride from Cozumel, nice to go over for a day, rent a car there and drive to the back side of the island. There you will find wide open beaches and a nice little restaurant called Coconuts. (Fun place, great views)

You can check out some of the tours at Playatrips.com.
Xcaret is only about a 5 min. taxi ride from PDC, so do not take the tour, just take a taxi and purchase your tickets at the Xcaret. The all-inclusive, minus the night show dinner, is a good deal, the food is really good.

No you don't have to bring her car seat, if you are comfortable holding her, but that is just a suggestion. Traffic is limited and most of the time you will only be driving short distances.
Feel free to ask me anything about the area at scubadaddy32@yahoo.

definitely bus it!! its cheeeeeeeeeeeap! i've been twice to cancun, both times bus'ing it wherever we went.... its like $1 american for the fair, buses run frequently all day/night.... also never take a cab there, its a major rip off and the drivers are all about tips and ripping you off...

we are renting a car in cancun to drive where we need to go. From people who have been frequently and know, we were told that it's easy to drive and everything is well marked. Not the trouble that one hears about.

The Bus system is very good, although they recruit their drivers from the Formula One racing teams I'm sure. There is a Bus every few minutes and it's about 7 pesos per person.

Taxis are very expensive in the Hotel Zone, you should find in your resort a chart of prices so that you know you're not being charged over the Odds, but still be careful with them. Always agree the rate before you get in, and check whether he's giving you a rate in Pesos or Dollars.

If you hire a car, make sure you use only one of the Really well know Companies, but be careful of the Mexican way of driving. I moved here 2 years ago, and it's been a real eye opener. There is no such thing as Courtesy on the roads, they never use their lights to change direction and are quite fond of cutting across you to get into a non existant gap.

The Hire cars themselves you will see advertised as $30.00 US a day, but then you get stung for the $700.00 USD deposit, plus the Insurance... and always examine the car with a fine tooth comb when you accept it, as the smallest thing wrong with it when you take it back, you'll get billed for. Be prepared to make a journey to the petrol station before you do anything else, as they are usually handed to you Empty.

As for the Baby Seat... Definately bring it if you're going to use a Hire Car.

Personally... I would recommend the Bus !! Cheap & Cheerful and one of Cancun's experiences !!

Hope this helps
Al

If you are in the hotel district bus or cab. No need to rent a car.

I went to Cancun on my honeymoon in 06. I think your better of with the bus system. It seems like it would be way too nerve racking driving anywhere down there. The buses are EVERYWHERE! You'll never have to wait very long for one. And they are very cheap to ride.

Cost Effective.......I'm not sure which would be best, but convenience wise, no question in my mind that the bus would be better. (You can always take taxi's every now and then as well).
