QUEEN VANETTE

Did the burrito originate in Mexico?

That's what I've always thought. But I know a few Mexicans who laugh whenever anyone mentions burritos & Mexico in the same sentence. They respond by saying, "It's a U.S. invention. Go to Mexico. You'll find out." Are they correct or mistaken?

Sorry-- I know this isn't a food category. But I keep getting error messages every time I try to click on the food categories. So I got frustrated and gave up.

Well I´m from Chihuahua Mexico, this is North of Mexico, and can tell you that burritos are in every corner all over North and North West Mexico,

If you meet someone from the center of Mexico or South they will probably say that burritos are not Mexican.

The thing is that Mexico is big enough inorder to have several regions with different culinary traditions and ingridients in their food, so if someone from Mexico city travel to Houston Texas in the Us and see burritos on the menu of the many Mex-Tex restaurants, and he never ate Burritos in the big taco city, since there is none restaurant in Chilangoland that serve this northen delicatessen, he will asume that burritos are an original Mex-Tex Food....

My self I was surprise the first time that i went to Mexico City and find out that there was not a single place where you could eat a Burrito! being my self from the North.

NACHOS were invented in Nogales Mexico, Caesar Salad in Tijuana...

I live in the state of Veracruz and they have never heard of burritos here...except to mean a small burro! A tortilla that is stuffed with ANYTHING, rolled up and deep fried, is called a "dorado."

jeanvaljean1970
They are actually mistaken. There are burritos in Mexico, especially in the north. They're very different from US burritos, they're usually smaller, and have one or two ingredients, that's it. They never have lettuce, yellow cheese or sour cream. More like a taco in a flour tortilla.

Garrison, a deep fried burrito (a taco in a flour tortilla) is an abomination called a chimichanga. You won't be able to find those anywhere in Mexico.

You could take a flour tortilla and deep fry it, then you top it with sugar, cinnamon and honey, and you would have a bunuelo.

A deep fried rolled-up taco in a corn tortilla is called a flauta.

In reading the answers I believe we can assume that they do have burritos in Mexico but they just call them by a different name in different regions. I agree though that they don't have hard shell tacos. Which is a shame because the others start to fall to pieces halfway through.

We live in Puerto Vallarta, my family owns a traditional Mexican food restaurant.
They do not use flower tortillas. This is food of the central region of Mexico. They only have white corn tortillas.

Many other restaurants in town have dishes like beef or chicken fajitas with flower tortillas, nine or ten inches Burritos filled with chicken or beef, tomato, onion, cheese, cilantro, red pepper and cream, guacamole and beans on the side.
Also the big fried Chimichangas.

Mexicans from the northern part of Mexico love those dishes as well as people from United States.

I think I am getting hungry.

Bye.

Mexico is a large country and each region has it's a unique cuisine. Burritos are not common in the southern areas of Mexico but they are common along the north. Burritos can range in size in Mexico but they're usually not gigantic and oversized like the kind you find in the US. I would say the burritos in the US were most influenced by the Mexican American community. We Mexican Americans often favor flour tortillas, while in Mexico people generally prefer or exclusively eat corn tortillas.

it along with nachos are american inventions. Hard taco shells as well

You will get laughed at in Mexico because you don't know the small differences.

The basic sandwich in Mexico is the TACO and a burrito is a rolled taco that is DEEP FRIED... if it's not DEEP FRIED then it's NOT A BURRITO... and there are even differences with Burritos... a BurritO has meat in it and a BurritA does NOT have meat... but most AmeriKans don't know the difference.

they were created in the US as an alternative to sandwiches
