Yes you do, and there are many places with widely differing prices who offer it. See 1st site below for my favorite...very inexpensive. See 2nd site for car permit info. |

First thing you can do is getting your car permit by mail you can do his by contacting the Mexican embassy in your area, so this way if there is a paper missing you still can get it before you leave. It may take you around 10 days to get the permit.
Insurance for Mexico you needed if you like to be safe, your insurance may cover you only up to 25 km south of the border so after that you will need insurance. i always drive all the way to Laredo TX and on I-35 you can find several signs that offer insurance, I had good experience with Sanborns Insurance is the one with the Mexican hat. The insurance for Mexico is kind of expensive compare to your regular insurance in US and Canada, the only thing is if you want to get the insurance all the way in Laredo you will miss the exit to go to Columbia bridge, I always go by Laredo on I-35 south just in case that I need something, food, gas or a place to sleep.
Also you need to know that if you are traveling in pay toll roads in Mexico you have an extra insurance for paying the fee and using the toll roads.
There is a new company from Monterrey in the US is called HEPA Seguros Monterrey you may get a better price since the company is from Monterrey.
And if you are driving in to Mexico yes your Canadian drivers license is valid.
Good luck!!! |

Yes, most US and I believe Canadian auto insurance will not cover you in Mexico. Mexico works very differently than the US and Can and many times it is better to not drive into the country. I grew up in southern AZ and we always parked our car at the border and used public transport. |

Yes, you will need a mexican policy driving to Monterrey... I've driven many times and always had good luck with Lewis & Lewis company out of L.A., find them on the internet. They are reasonable and can offer you a package for your needs. Your Canadian license should work fine... |

Yes it's a very good idea, the local police ignore you if you have the insurance and harass you if you don't. So it's worth the money. |

I actually don't know if you need the insurance, but your driver's license should be valid here (I live in Mexico), I don't know how old you are but in Mexico you must be 16 to have a permit and 18 to have an actual license, so if you are that age there should be no problem.
Anyway, about the insurance thing I would get it if I were you, believe me, the police here will stop anyone just to get money, specially someone in a foreign car, so better have all your paper work in order so they have no reason to bother you.
Enjoy! |
