I was wondering if I needed a passport to go to Mexico or to come back? If you know of a site where I can read up on it that would be great also. If not thats ok ur advice will help anyways. |

Holy cow! You got 6 answers, all wrong! If you are FLYING to Mexico, you must have a passport If you are DRIVING, you do nto need a passport until Jan. 2008. There is a terrible backup on passports right now and it is taking at least 16 weeks to get one. If you pay the extra fee to have it expedited, it is taking more than 4 weeks. however, if you need a passport and need to travel befroe 16 weeks, they are offering a waiver right now. This means that people who have applied fro a passport, have the receipt and follow the instructions on the state dept. website can be excused from the passport requirement. you need to see the website below for instructions on getting a passport and to read about the passport waiver. As to needing a visa for Mexico...all you need is the tourist card. if you fly , you will get it on the plane. If you drive, you can get it at the border. The cost is about $22.00 U.S. The 1st website gives passport and waiver info. The secong website tells you that travellers going to Mexico by AIR now need a passport, but those going by land or sea do not need a passport until Jan. 2008. |

There's a good reason Charlie is cited as a "top contributor." His answer is the ONLY correct and complete one here. Follow his advice.
If you are flying to Mexico, apply for a passport now, keep your receipt as proof of your application. With the current waiver announced a week or so ago, it will get you through without a passport.
If you are driving or going on a bus, you DO NOT need a passport yet, but you DO need proof of citizenship to get into Mexico and back into the US. So take a certified copy or original birth certificate as well as proof of residence, such as a drivers' license.

In response to the know it alls........ as of yesterday and because of all of the confusion..... travel companies, cruise lines, airlines, etc. being confused.......
Travel with a license and application is not enough and was announced by the Mexican government. You must also have a birth certificate. Which is a problem since you have to submit an original when applying for a passport.
You can get a passport really fast if you pay for it. First you pay for the expidited service. And you apply at the post office so you pay for one day mail each way. Mine came in 7 days. |

If you are traveling to Mexico as a tourist, you must obtain an FMT tourist permit. The FMT allows you to visit or make multiple trips to Mexico for a maximum period of 180 days. The Mexican Immigration official issuing the FMT has sole discretion in determining your length of stay and may ask you the expected duration of your trip. As a tourist, you are not authorized to conduct any type of business activity in Mexico

You do need a passport to enter US again. But while going you do not. Don't ask why this is so. Net result is that you need one to go and come back. If you do not have a passport yet and are travelling soon then you may be a little out of luck because there are huge back logs in processing them. |
