NON American citizens need passports ( even if they hold "green" cards ) starting January 1, 2007

American citizens need passports IF THEY ARE TRAVELING BY AIR as of January 1 2007

ALL American citizens will need passports for re-entry into the states beginning Jan 1, 2008

I hope that clears it up for you.

I don't know, but be sure to take out some Mexican insurance; your insurance you bought in the USA is no good there.

Common Sense
Yes.

Midwest Maven
Yes you will. Your best resourse is the U.S. State Department website...they have all of the information and also forms you would need to fill out to get a passport.

yes you do! Its a new law and has recently begun enforcement. It will cost you more to try to get back home without it, so save yourself the pain and pay the $95 and just get a passport. You can apply at the local post office.
