Charlie and Tonalc2 are both correct if you are a United States citizen or legal resident. If you are not then yes you will need a passport.
This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America.
Please pick an answer as best answer, even if it is not mine. |

Not until Jun 1 2009.
*****************************
Beginning January 31, 2008, U.S. and Canadian citizens 19 years and older who enter the U.S. at land and sea ports of entry from within the Western Hemisphere will need to present government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license as proof of identity, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, or a passport. Children age 18 and under will be able to enter with proof of citizenship. Verbal claims of citizenship and identity alone will not be sufficient to establish identity and citizenship for entry into the United States.
However after the first of June you will need a passport or a passport card within the Western Hemisphere. |

If you are driving or crossing the border by foot you are not required to have a passport until June 2009. You will need a birth certificate and drivers license. |

You got a WHOLE bunch of wrong answers. Passports will NOT be needed for LAND travel to and from Mexico until June 2009. Right now, you need your birth certificate and photo I.D. See site below to read the law for yourself. |

No. Been there done that. |

Just piling on with the correct answer, to try to counteract the amount of wrong answers.
If you are flying, you will need a passport. If you are driving, you need government ID (driver's license) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate). |

Went not too long ago. I just walked right in and no one asked for a passport. Those things change with the weather so it is hard to say, but I would lean towards no. |

Unless you are flying into No gales, which I sincerely doubt, you will need both a drivers license and a certificate of birth, if you were born in the USA or Canada. After June 09 you will need a passport.
However, having said that, the passport is still the best form of identification recognized world-wide. If you plan to leave the USA in the future it is best to apply for a passport as soon as you can. |

YES!! Really the reason for the passport is for you to get back into America from anyplace outside America. Please don't leave the country to go to Mexico to buy booze, prescriptions etc, you may find a a real Customs and Immigration Agent doing the job. Yes, I have been across the line to Canada and Mexico, not all people working the border are doing their Job. Please do not get stuck outside your country!! |

I don't know if you need to have one to enter Mexico, I assume from the United States, however, I do think that you need it to get back into the United States. So, I would take it with you...so you can enter the US when you get back! |

You might enter Nogales Mexico with a driver's license but have you thought about being let back into the US? |

Brittney Leigh

Well you can ENTER with a license, but you can't get out with a license haha.
You need a passport to leave, so I would suggest one of those, they recently changed the law, and so I would get one, it's always a good thing to have anyways. |

Hmm..well I take it you are saying security is lax in Nogales? I don't know any other cities in foreign countries that will let you in without a passport, so I would say that you probably need one to go to Nogales as well..
I know that in order to fly into Cancun and Cozumel you have to have a passport..
I wouldn't risk it. That's some sketchy s*** right there.. |

You need a passport to pass in country border. |

If you drive in to mexico by car, you will need a passport card or passport book. If you fly into Mexico, you will only be allowed entry with a passport book. |
