Traveling to Mexico used to not require a passport, but now with the new immigration fiasco, I'm not sure if they've changed the rules. Looks like your answerer No. 1 may know something is happening this December? |

To travel accross countries you need a passport no matter which country you are from. The passport is an "international ID" that helps control your country and the other countries you are going to, to know where are you from and any in/out move.
You can not leave your country without a passport and you can not get in to another country without a passport.
So Yes, you need a passport :) (Cancun is in mexico and your are in the U.S)
Some countries may ask you for another paper "Visa". The visa is a permition that the country you are going to gives you and it means "you are allowed to get in to my country". Not all the countries ask for a visa. US citizens are not ask for a visa in Mexico (cancun). |

Hola Milly. If you are going to Cancun after the first of the year, yes, you will need a Passport.
If you are going this year, you will need a Government issued Birth Certificate and a photo ID. If your name has changed because of marriage, or for any reason, you will need to provide that documentation. Tim |

We went to Cancun this past June, and went ahead and got our passports anyhow. By the end of this December it will be required to go, but as of now it's not. My understanding is this: it's not hard to leave the country without your passport, but it maybe harder to get back in!
The passport just makes things go much smoother, and we're really glad we got ours, we're thinking of another trip somewhere! |

Unless you are driving or walking ... ask your airlines
The answer is no ... just an official ID and a notarized birth certificate. Much easier with a passport |

I think in Mexico you just need I.D. (driver's license or picture I.D.) and maybe a birth certificate. However you can stay in the good 'ol U. S. of A. and avoid all of that hassle. |

Is Cancun in the United States?
No, it wasn't last I checked.
Do you need a passport to get anywhere outside the United States?
Yup, even to Canada.
Now, that was easy, wasn't it? |
