Do I need a passport to go into Mexico ?

I have heard that you need one when you fly into to mexico.
I have also heard that you do not need one when you drive into Mexico from California.

If you are going to fly into Mexico you do infact need a passport. However, if you drive you are only required a vaild photo ID and the original copy of your birth certificate (this means it must have the raised seal, a photo copy will not do) also if you are going tobe in Mexico more than 72 hours or leave a border zone, you will need to apply for a tourist card at the border. There is an office there in which to apply and the cost is only about $23 USD. Make sure when you tell them how long you plan to stay when you get your card that you "over shoot" you duration a little. In other words if you are going to be there 30 days, tell them 60 just to be safe. You dont want to try and come back on a dead tourist card, this can cause alot of un-necessary trouble for you.

If you do wish to fly there is also another option, one which I took advantage of last weekend. In order to avoid the long drive and travel time, you can book a flight into San Deigo, CA and simply take a bus across the border to TJ. From there you can go to the airport and fly anywhere you want to in Mexico. The same also applies to your return home. I would suggest you consider talking with your local travel agency for booking your flights, they will be able to get your flight times close enough that you won't spent too long in airports between flights, and they can also find some pretty good rates.

The passport requirements are scripted to change again in Jan 2008 in which case you will need a passport to drive or walk across the border, so keep that in mind when making your plans.

Have a fun a safe trip, if you have any more questions, or would like some ideas on what to do while in Mexico please feel free to e-mail me.

Have fun!

IF you are a U.S. citizen or naturalized citizen of the U.S. you do not need a passport to drive or walk across the border you just need an i.d. and you birth certificate or naturalization document. IF you Fly into or out of the U.S. you do need a passport. In 2008 we will need out passport no matter how we cross over.

Here is the website where you can read the regulations for yourself.

Yes, you need one to fly but you don't need to drive. For details go to state.gov. After January 2008 they will begin requiring a passport for land travel.

Us citizens do not need a passport to drive or take a bus to Mexico. If you are on a cruise and it leaves from a US port and returns to a US port no passport needed. If you fly you need a passport. Documents needed if not flying valid photo ID and a orginal birth certificate with raised seal. Next year the requirements will change and you will need a passport. It is taking 10-12 weeks to process a passport currently.
