Here is the correct info...you absolutely must have a passport to get on an international flight...this means you do need a passport to travel to Mexico. That "flexibility" program to be able to travel if you have applied for a passport, but not yet received it, expires Sept. 30...too soon to help you. You must apply for a passport and you will not be able to fy to Mexico until you receive it. See website below for all passport info. |

as of january of this year it is mandatory to reenter US, in the past they'd only asked proof of citizenship, birthcert for instance |

Yes you do. The law has recently changed and I believe that now you do. |

I think, because of 9/11 and homeland security, that yes, you will need a passport now to get back into the USA. |

To enter Mexico, it is much easier if you have one. You'll get hassled by immigration if you don't have one.
To re-enter the States, yes you need one. If you've applied and can present proof, show that. However, the Department of State is getting caught up on the backlog, so you will definitely have to have one soon.
I'm sure every summer there is going to be a backlog of applications for passports. People put off things until the last minute! |

If I'm not mistaken, the US government has made it clear that everybody needs a US passport to pass through its borders with Mexico and Canada by January 1, 2008. This announcement was made months ago, I wondered if anybody was listening! Go to the US government website. |

I'm pretty sure you need a passport to enter any country.
So there you go, you most probably need a passport to go to Mexico. The rules have changed a bit over the years, so... yeah! |

Yes you will need one. However, if you have applied for a passport and have not yet received one there are waivers for that right now, due to the backlog of passport applications.
Here is what the government site says on this:
The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced Friday, June 8, that U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region, who have applied for, but not yet received passports, can re-enter the United States by air. This accommodation will expire at the end of September, and beginning October 1, 2007, all U.S. Citizens traveling outside the United States will be required to present a valid passport to enter and depart from the United States. This accommodation does not mean that Americans are exempt from meeting the entry requirements of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region, some of which require a passport, certified birth certificate, or other evidence of citizenship for entry.
We have reached out to the governments of countries affected by WHTI to consult with them about our announcement. Many of them have agreed to take a flexible approach toward their own entry requirements. For the most current information on entry requirements at their destination, travelers should contact their airline.
U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region who have applied for, but not yet received passports, can re-enter the United States by air by presentation of a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007. The federal government is making this accommodation for air travel due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand. U.S. Citizens who departed the U.S. under this travel accommodation prior to October 1, 2007 with Department of State official proof of application and government-issued identification will be readmitted with these same documents if returning to the United States after September 30.
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) was mandated by Congress in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for citizens and legitimate international visitors. WHTI requirements for air travel took effect on January 23, 2007.
Adults who have applied for but not yet received a passport should present government-issued photo identification and an official proof of application from the U.S. Department of State. Children under the age of 16 traveling with their parents or legal guardian will be permitted to travel with the child’s proof of application status. Children traveling alone should carry a copy of their birth certificate, baptismal record or a hospital record of birth in the United States in addition to their passport application status documentation. This accommodation applies to all American citizens who apply for passports, until September 30, when this accommodation period ends. U.S. citizens with pending passport applications can obtain proof of application at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html.
Since implementation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has and will continue to exercise its current authorities in unique circumstances to allow individuals subject to the WHTI requirements into the United States based on other evidence of identity and citizenship.
Travel document security remains a top priority for the U.S. Government. Both the 9/11 Commission and the U.S. Congress urged strengthening of travel documents to prevent entry of terrorists across our borders, reduce use of fraudulent documents, and speed up entry procedures. |
