Do I need an updated passport or can I just present a driver's license and birth certificate to travel? |
My wife and I are planning a Carribean cruise next month and I'm trying to make sure we have the proper documentation. We both have passports but they have expired (Nov. 2003). We both have govt issued (State) driver' licenses and original birth certificates to establish our identity. Can these two items be used in lieu of getting new passports or do we have to have new passports in addition to these two items? |

The regulation to require a passport takes effect June 1st 2009 for cruises and land border crossing. For flying into Mexico, passports are required now. But check with your cruise line, They may want you to have a passport or a passport card--see the link below. |

As long as you are US citizens, the your US birth certificates plus your photo driver's licenses should be sufficient as long as you are traveling before June 2009. After that date, a passport will be required.
Note that if your wife changed her name when she got married, she should also bring her marriage certificate to prove that the person named on her birth certificate is the same person on her driver's license. |

Rhino is right! Law does not require passports for sea travel, but some cruise lines like you to have them. |

No more drivers lic. traveling,that stop at the beginning of 08'. I used to travel to Mexico with only drivers license and birth certificate, but now because of certain new regulations every time you travel from country to country or internationally you must have a legal passport. |
